Oceanias this year - RAW!

In the technical meeting they run over what the tech controller will look out for. No gear check.

If you try to get on the platform with something not approved you get refused- the timer still counts down. So lifters need to make sure everything is ok or they miss lifts trying to change sleeves, shirt etc.

Anyway this is what I mean, why can't this be done at all comps, I mean sure the majority of the spectators won't know the difference and they'll all be lifting in the same group etc but that's beside the point.

Until raw lifting takes off in New Zealand and we have separate raw and equipped comps at most levels of competition then would having the two types of lifting distinguishable at the same comp not be the first step towards having more people involved in it ?

You are right there, BB it is up to the individual association, to sort out how they operate or conduct a comp. Raw lifting already has the Classic Cup (Raw Nationals) PH held the first one last year, next Classic Cup comp is in Tauranga in November. We hold Raw and Equipped CD Champs, and held a Raw Novice in June.

Cos I am sure that some new people that want to give it a go are intimidated and don't want to get their asses kicked by having to compete against some guy in a squat suit 3 sizes too small and a bench shirt equally as tight.

I agree in a sense here, but if new lifters are going out to win their first comp, then that is not quiet right. They should be trying to get the best lifts they can and a good total, to build on, not worry about someone who is in equipment. This is a sport where you can only control what you lift, you cannot control what others lift. If the person in equipment took it off, he will still beat that first timer. Novice lifters should be treated as such Novice, that's why we run novice comps to introduce new lifters to the sport.

I know they have the ability to do one novice comp but that's only one regional comp, what if they want to give the NI/SI a go or even Nationals if they're good enough, they may not meet the requirements to do these as there's only the equipped standards or just plain don't want to get thrashed by someone in a suit.

Most Associations run under the same rules where novice can do a regional, CDPA is different you have to qualify to do our Regional Champs, by doing a Novice Comp. There use to be a Black Total which was the National Qualifying Total to the CDs took some lifters 3 years to do our CD Champs.

There are standards for qualifying to the NIs/SIs and Nationals RAW, it is 15% of the equipped Total. We send (Team Powerhouse) all our new lifters to the Equipped Nationals RAW, our lifters have had no issues with this. There is to much going on, at your first Nationals to worry about equipment and everything else. You need to enjoy your first National comp, and build on your Total this is the thing Build on Your Total.

Edit - Just to not start a shitstorm, I'm definitely not against equipped lifting, I see the amount of work the guys here put into lifting with their gear and it takes a lot of effort and the mastery of the gear takes years.

I just think that we raw lifters put in equally a lot of work and this should be recognized accordingly. Otherwise the fact that people are lifting raw isn't recognized until international level and this isn't really a motivator for newbies to give it a go

Raw lifting is recognised but until the numbers grow, and it can sustain a comp on its own, ie SI champs, 30+ lifters Raw Nationals 80+ lifters. Or to the stage, where there are enough lifters going to the National Champs, to warrant their own Section, then they will have to lift in equipped comps.

Most associations should be looking at running, separate Comps in the future anyway, as the Numbers pick up. Everyone went on about RAW lifting last year, all over the country, we held the first RAW Classic Cup 90% of the lifters were from the CDs.

Every year we send between, 6-10 lifters Raw to the Nationals, this year we are sending about 8.

I just got an email from the secretary of the WBOP PL association confirming that the 2012 Oceanias will be a raw only competition. If this is true, can one qualify for the O's at the 2012 Raw Nationals in November? I was told previously that one must lift at the equipped Nationals to lift at the Oceanias. But that was when it was supposed to be equipped as well.

Pls aware me

I believe in theory this is possible, but in reality, the Oceania team is finalised after the nationals-3 months before the Oceanias. So qualifying a month before isn't going to work out.

Correct me if I'm wrong OB/SP.

I was always planning on doing the Oceania's raw and was told I had to compete at Nationals in Dunedin to do so, either (a) compete raw and use the total or (b) compete equipped and use the total minus 15% to qualify for Oceania's raw. So you are correct Drizz, the real nationals in Dunedin must be done to do Oceania's

So is it 100% confirmed as raw only? Will any further information be coming out? The Oceania Powerlifting site has nothing about it (in fact the home page hasn't been updated since 30th Jan 2011) and neither does the NZPF site. Thought there may have been information officially released by now. Any links to official information would be appreciated.

I think word is they may have found time for equipped?

Probably best to ask in the thread on PH bro (and update here when we know) as that was where they mentioned it.

Curious myself as I need to plan the training cycle(s) for after nats which will depend on which comp I'm going for (Oceanias/BBro)
