Genetics...

Hi all

Look i'm wanting to hear from anyone who has had good results increasing the size of their calves...

Unfortunately i'm not blessed with great genetics in the calves department and really want to add some size, currently do calf raises in squat rack (with small blocks to allow full ROM) and seated calf raises..... Is there anything I can add for size?

Cheers peeps!

How often have you been hitting them? Every day? Every other day?

Calves are a weak point of mine also so have been doing them every 2nd day, as mine recover quickly. Try mixing things up between heavy weight low rep and lighter weight high rep, just as you would with any other muscle group.

Um...I do them on leg days so only once a week.

Ok so i'll increase frequency to twice a week and see how that goes. Mine recover slowly and usually really hurt 2 days later. I do between 12-15 reps and select a medium weight say 50kgs on standing and about 20kgs seated...

Cheers Rxx

That's just what works for me tho, you might be totally different.

Also, I tend to not do them on leg day. (Might do toe press on the leg press in between sets). Just try and find what works for you to stimulate new growth. Don't be afraid to try new things.

My calves are far from anything to write home about, but for that very reason, it has pushed me over the years to learn as much as possible about them. And I'm proud to have turned them into what they are now, not Dorian by any means, but larger compared to what they were.

The weak simply give up and usually blame genetics. Well yes it is genetics, but not the way you think it is. Genetics isn't an excuse to just stop and give up, it's just a way to realize that you must train them a little different. Yes, we all know some freak(Actually my wife is a calf freak, I hate it sometimes LOL) that can get them to grow simply by walking to get the mail, and f*ck I hate those fat tradesman c&%ts that have big claves!! It's just not fair. But there is hope.

The genetic factor comes from an evolutionary aspect as to what your ancestors did way back when. For back in the day, if you tore a calf muscle or anything around that area, that would be pretty much it, it terms of working on the farm etc., etc. So over the years, that area developed an extremely tight fascia to combat the area of injury. The theory I have is, the tighter it is, the more your ancestors relied on physical work.

So, the way to get the calves to grow is to stretch the fascia like crazy. I'm talking extreme stretching in, before, around, after, whenever you can, around the calf workout. But more importantly after the session. Hold the stretches for lengths of 2 minutes or longer, but please be careful not to hurt yourself. This is the very reason why the use of synthol is so popular in bodybuilding circles across the entire world. If used correctly, the whole idea of it, is to stretch the fascia, then you can train and the muscle has room to grow. It's just that its reputation has been messed up by a few dicks, that have gone to the extreme, and made a total joke out of what they are trying to do. You would actually freak out if you found out of the amount of top level Pro's that you know and love who use it big time, but you would have no idea simply by looking a them.

Having said all that, I'm not advising you to go out and start waking in synthol LOL, injecting needles directly into muscles can be extremely dangerous if not performed under professional conditions. I'm just using Synthol as an example, to back up the theory of needed to stretch the fascia to give the muscle room to grow. The very best way, is the most painful, and that's to hit calves everyday(As well as deep tissue massages can be extremely helpful also) just do them wherever you can. ALL the way down, slowly, using the negative motion, pause on the FULL stretch position at the bottom for a count, then slowly up, to the FULL contracted position, pushing on top of your big toe, and once again, HOLD this fully contracted position for a count, then slowly lower again. Fully stretch after each set, and then to the extreme once finished. Even do a few sets of calves in the shower, I know you can't go all the way down, but you can change your foot position in the shower to several different angles, which adds to the wicked shower pump you get(You'll understand what I mean when you try it :D )

One more thing, after asking a genetic calf freak(IFBB Canadian Pro) a couple of years ago, he mentioned that besides his already very gifted genetics, that he busted his nut to add to them to make them into what they are today. He would train calves every day, but what I took on board the most was the idea of him training calves every day BEFORE he trained his other muscle groups for about 20 - 30 minutes.

Hope this helps.

@ meataxe, damn that some good stuff man! Will try and do what you said. With regards to genetics I find my muscle in the calves start relatively high up and that makes them seem small to me. That stretch shit should sort them out hopefully. Cheers

Sorry guys, I forget to mention in that calf post about the famous FST-7 program that evenone knows about all ready. This program evolves totally around trying to stretch the fascia as much as possible with as much blood volume as possible to the area.

....The one very big thing that forgot to mention in the vidoes, is the extreme use of synthol before each session in that particular muscle part, also used in this progam to stretch it even more....

I tried working out my calves every work out for close to a year ,cant say they havent grown , but they are dense now like i actually have muscle now as opposed to before

http://www.t-nation.com/free_online_art ... ive_calves

Going to try this program just for a change lets see if i actually get growth from it.

thanks, this is interesting. gonna give this a good go along with the long stretching meataxe suggests for at least a month and see how things are going.
