Floaters in the eye?? WTF

Against All Odds

Recommended Posts

Morning peeps.

I'm currently on the Strong Lifts 5x5 program and have been for the past 4 - 5 months and its going really well.

I'm at 120kg for squats and Ive never gone this heavy before (this is all natural btw with a mass gainer shake (i'm ecto)). So a couple of days ago when pushing this shit, what looked to be blood started flowing into the view of my right eye and my vision from then was blurred and to a point has blinded my right eye (about 20-30% clear view). I now know that they are called floaters which are actually shadows of minerals or something in the back of the eye that causes the blur vision.

My soul hungers to lift heavier. Questions are:

Have you any experience in this and what did you do to cure/prevent from happening again?

Is it part of the game?

Can diet play a part in this?

Stats:

Height 184m

Current weight 90kg

Approx BF% 13-15

Thanks guys any advice will be appreciated.

The way you worded that made me LOL hard!

i had them (floaters) since I was a little kid and never knew they weren't normal until recently stumbling across an article about it on another forum.. never went to see an opto because it's been several years without issues.

in your case however, it seems more serious because you experienced a bit of blindness and on top of that, your problems occurred in the midst of a heavy lift. i'm no eye expert but i'd say there is risk of retinal detachment and would suggest getting qualified medical advice ASAP!

Yer, just to be sure, see a doctor(A sports doctor, not a f&%king clueless GP), to see what the deal is. You need to breathe when you train mate, holding your breath will mess you up brother.

ps....if your eye is literally bleeding, please make sure you get some video footage of it, as this shit looks wicked on YouTube!! LOL:):)

Burst blood vessel in you eye possibly from the heavy strain your body is under, just a guess though.

If you haven't seen or spoken to the optometrist then I'd be booking an appointment today.

Appointment already booked for today.

Yea I've had little floaters from a few years ago when I took a cricket ball to the face and did learn to live with it, but now its almost 10 times worse, but yea deff getting it looked at.

Just wondering if a weight lifting belt (or whatever they called) might help? (coz thats what they're for right?? aiding in pressure build up in the body?)

Sorry still a rookie.

It'd make it worse I'd imagine. Using them correctly, you take a large breath into your diaphragm and push your stomach out against the belt. This helps tighten your abs and lower back, and increases your intra-abdominal pressure which is what helps support the spine. Wouldn't that increase in pressure be worse for your eye?

This!

I have had them since a kid. The bits are from the inside of the eye ball that have come away and are now floating in the jelly.

I saw the optometrist and they can't help. The only time I am 'free' of them is when wearing tinted sunglasses, as the shadows aren't obvious. I get migraines if I read too long as it is hard to focus on letters when hundreds of blurry shadows are crossing the words I read.

I did mauy Thai when in my 20's and it made it worse. Impacts can effect it, and so can rupturing the eye through straining.

I always thought I was mental but as Ron said I too discovered it was affecting a lot of people.

i work in an ophthalmic dept for CMDHB - this doesn't sound too good. suggest you bypass the optometrist (they aren't retina specialists [back of the eye] only specialists in refraction [correcting the focus point]) and head to greenlane hospital acute eye deptartment (if in auckland).

floaters are small and usually minor - but this is a bleed / haemorrage - something far different. treat all eye issues as serious until you know better - you only get one pair mate. if your vision drops for any reason / you start to see 'lighting bolts' - floor it to greenlane.. .

good luck!

Yea floaters are just annoying little shadows of shit that I believe are floating around in the vitreous humor, my left eye has developed a few since turning 25 and they piss me off to no end but it doesn't really affect my vision what you have is far more serious go and get it seen to immediately vision is very bloody precious.

Nothing worse then trying to stare at a hot chick (remotely, without her noticing) and having this blob come in to view.

Was at Greenlane acute yesterday, found a tear on the horse shoe 11 o'clock and a burst vein. Had it lasered and went back today to get checked, laser treatment will take up to 3 days to heal fully with minor discomfort to the eye.

Get this, no f*cking heavy shit for 6 weeks??? WTF man. Its like breathing with no air.

But will learn from this and soldier on, so will take a month and abit off, then back at it...I just hope I don't become too complacent with this time off... <<<

Thansk for the replys guys.

This is my happy place 8)

Good you got it sorted.

You could switch up your training routine to lighter weight more reps. Or is all lifting out of the question?

He didn't say all lifting was out of the question, but anything that requires the valsalva maneuver is out of the question and Id much rather go heavy, so I'ma do something i've not done before and be smart. Take this time off eat heaps and prepare to go to war.
