140X10X10 Bench Challenge

Recommended Posts

Since coming back from injury I have been trying to hit more volume and higher reps. Not an easy thing for me given my background. Bit it's a nice change. 140 kg bench for 10 sets of 10 reps has been something I have wanted to attack for a while. I gave it a go yesterday and it's close to the hardest thing I have tried. I recorded the last set as below.

I'm not suggesting that this is any great feat. I don't really care either way. But it is a challenge. I was pleased to get all of the reps but was unable to lock out the last rep of set 10 FML. I suspect most powerlifters will not be interested in trying this for obvious reasons. But the bodybuilders around these parts such as Hamish C, Harry B, Sam V, Steve O and others may have already been there or maybe interested in giving this a crack. It remains on my list of must do's.

More chance I would do 10 sets of 10 with 100k and still struggle bro! That's a very impressive effort. Be nice if you made 140k look just a bit harder especially seeing as you had already done 90!!!!! reps leading up to this set.

Amazing effort, Doc  Those first 2-3 reps made it look like you could have got 20  Must be ready to head back into the heavy stuff soon?

Think I'd struggle to manage 10x10x140 for Deadlifts, might try bench in 10 years or so :shifty:

:ditto: - no way I'd even attempt that.

Even as a percentage of 1RM, I know from doing 10x10 at 50% for squats a few weeks back, the last couple of sets are a real grind.

Well done, Doc :notworthy:

Cheers Phedder. Yes the plan is to hit Westside max effort stuff for bench in a few weeks. I will probably stay away from pure flat bench and focus more on incline, decline and bench with chains. I tend to get stale when i just bench. I am already doing some max effort stuff for posterior chain.

How are all the injuries healing up doc? What lifts may be on the horizon?

I'm feeling pretty good bro. Bicep is strong again and my shoulder is getting better all of the time but I am still a bit tentative hence the lighter weight and higher volume. I am enjoying the change.

The plan is to lift at the Eastside Open in December and post a decent raw total. I won't say too much but 900 plus at around 115 is realistic. The plan is to be a full 120 and hit some big number in the next 18 months. But talk is talk. Time to post some real numbers.

Thanks bro. Enjoying your journey. Cathy was the coach when I went to the Junior Worlds in Indonesia back in the day. She was awesome and I only spent a few days under her guidance. I know she has also worked some great coaches including Graeme Fong and she was also guided by Charles Poliquin at one stage. I doubt whether you would find greater knowledge in this country.

Tried tonight. Got 6 easy sets, the next 2 were harder then failed on the 10th rep on the 9th set :(

Such a good challenge of stamina. Gonna try again next week. We use 45lb plates at flex so technically it was 142.5kg's plus collars. Might try again at a gym that uses 20kg plates next time, see it that helps :D

Well done mate. How does your chest feel? I usually get a sore chest whatever I do. But this next day feeling is a completely different one. Almost feels like I am still pumped. I only wish I got the same sensation as Arnold lol.

Thank you brother you are right, I think if ya in Auckland and serious about powerlifting you would be silly not to get in touch she is worth her weight in gold and a very focused person, personally I am learning so much about techinque which muscle groups to use, about activating the core and explosive speed, but its going to take time for it all to click as I work on recruiting / strengthening muscles that are weak I can't do it in the 15 week build up but am improving... so patience and consistency will serve me well and one day I might be able to give a go on one of ya challenges big guy.

Heaps of scope to reach your potential bro. Who knows where that sits. With Cathy you are more likely to get there. Dream big I say.

  • 2 weeks later...

Switch to incline which is a bit more of a challenge obviously. Started on 120kg for 10 sets of 10 and this was okay. Recorded the last set below. Will work towards 140 for 10 sets of 10 in a couple of weeks. I am a bit lighter having been sick- about 110 kg.

Here it is. Hate away. Like I said I don't really have any idea whether this is even relevant. But it is a challenge and the chest pump is out of this world. If for nothing else it is a good change. I'm interested in other things that guys and girls do to challenge themselves physically and mentally.
