High protein intake and kidney health

Wow up to 500g a day. I wish you and your kidneys good luck. An absolute waste.

What is the correct amount of protein intake per day per pound of bodyweight?

I always thought 1.5g of protein per pound per day to grow? No?

I will grow better with much less protein, and less calories?

1.5 - 2g per kilo of bodyweight. I weigh just about 150kg and i dont do more than 300g of protein a day. Does the job for me. But 500g is too much.

uh I thought Hormones, especial test would influence your growth and proteins are the building blocks used.

On the other hand I think that test has a relationship with insulin somewhere along the line.

So I would think you really want to avoid under dosing protein and eating a whole lot extra would be a waste. Eating extra carbs may actually more than extra protein.

I may be wrong though :)

500g of WPI is about 450g of protein.

So at 1.5g per kg of protein to GROW, your saying that a 100kg guy should have no more than 150g of protein per day???

You dont think thats a little low?

So I should be have 200g or protein per day? wow, you got upto 150kg eating like that, of muscle. Shit you must know alot more about this than me

Oh hai Dr. Broscience

Yeah broscience. Actually no, fully qualified in nutrition, training, coaching and the list goes on and playing 10 years at top level sport. So no, no broscience here. I guess bodybuilders do know everything. My Bad

FYI i thought he meant he is doing 500g of protein from WPI. then there is other foods to consider during the day that he might consume which will in turn add up on the protein all together.

I aim for 1.5g of protein per day per pound of bodyweight. I weigh 300pnds so aim for 450g of protein per day. Alot of days I only take WPI as my source of proetin, so 500g of WPI is 450g of protein.

1.5g protein has always worked for me. 2-3g of carbs and .5-1g of fats.

Fair enough. I also have a decade of competitive sport and of bodybuilding behind me and have a honours degree in pharmacology & physiology so I do know what I'm talking about. His kidneys will be fine unless he has some degree of renal failure and assuming he drinks adequate amounts of water. Also, none of the protein will be "wasted", and given the fact that he is a 300lb bodybuilder, the amount of protein he is consuming isn't excessive. He did say that on some days he lives off the stuff which I took to mean he wasn't consuming significant protein from other foods.

Not trying to disrespect you here, but if it's no broscience could you please link me to any studies done on healthy young to middle-aged athletes that show high levels of protein intake damage the kidneys? Curious as to your nutrition background also, what type of qualification?

I actually agree that it does seem high/unnecessary. Maybe he could get the same results with a bit less protein and more carbs/fats. Maybe he wouldn't. But what he's doing is clearly working, and I doubt doing any real damage. More than one way to skin a cat remember (I've always found that saying a little disturbing :shifty: )

Be careful there Phedder. I asked who was actually skinning cats these days a while back.

IDW linked in a article I never want to see again

I've always been impressed with Bluto's approach of getting the majority of his daily protein intake from his WPI shakes. Its obviously working judging from the size and strength of the guy but its not something I could do. I just love eating meat too much!

I am man enough to say when i got something wrong and i did by asuming that Bluto was just your average body builder.(80-100kg maybe) I didnt realize he was 300lbs. Obviously that does change the equasion on my behalve a bit. It is fair enough to say that 450g is not a bad idea as he's body is very capable of utilising it.

I guess assumption is the mother of all fuckups. I rememer a time when i was on just about that much since im over 300 too but going lower on protein and increasing my carbs has not negatively impacted me at all. My bad agian.

From my understanding there is no valid studies showing significant links between high protein diets and kidney damage in subjects with normal renal function.

That said if there is renal impairment high protein can cause damage. Now here's the kicker - I saw an article a few weeks back showing something like 80% of a group of AAS using PLers & BBers had impaired renal function, with a reasonable % being termed "nephrotic".... google the article if you really care!

Interesting. And was the AAS attributed to causing this? Or is it that AAS users will be more likely to have a higher protein intake anyway?

I'm scratching to remember details but I think a lot were hypertensive (high bp's) which definately stresses kidneys.

Worth remembering that the "norms" used for kidney functions don't fit well with peeps with high amounts of muscle mass. Messes with creatinine levels and subsequent calculations like GFR. Urea usually rises with high protein diet too.
