Starting out

Recommended Posts

Im suprising my younger brother with a gym membership seeing as he made the 1st 15.

Hes 14, 6ft and about 65kg soaking wet. Needs to get bigger and stronger to benefit his rugby (going up guys in the forward pack that can be upwards of 120kgs he needs a bit more)

I want to start him off on something very basic, something that covers all the big lifts - Squats, front squats, deads, rows, bench and overhead doing something a long the lines of 5x5 adding weight gradually as he learns the movements.

What do you guys think? How did you guys start off?

I reakon you've pretty much nailed it with those lifts, but imo 5 x 5 maybe is to advanced for someone starting out lifting? I know a 14 year old me would have just used that as an excuse to pile on the plates and lose good form pretty quick. Unless hes going to be working out with you?

I reckon a standard 5x5 starting with just the bar could be a good option.

Otherwise a full body compound style workout 3 days a week would be another good starter rountine

Simple but effective stuff like:

- pullups

- pressups

- squats

- bench press

- rows

- deadlifts

- overhead press
