"24 Hour Gym Chains"

Just wondering what people's views are on 24 hour chains. It seems to be challenging traditional gyms to the point where they will soon outnumber them. In Australia as in NZ they are opening everywhere. I must admit to enjoying the overall convenience factor. My question is are they here to stay or just a passing fade. I would be interested in hearing people's views.

They will stay until someone dies in the middle of the night somewhere and the place gets sued to hell and back... then they won't be able to afford insurance and wham... fad done!

nah shouldn't be an issue i think.. you sign some sort of disclaimer/waiver when you join, right? well i'm guilty of not actually reading what i signed but i do recall the guy mentioning some sort of disclaimer about this.

dunno if it's such a big issue here but i remember seeing on some american forums that some people will only join 24 hour gyms for whatever reason (convenience, privacy, or maybe they are scott herman and wanna make all sorts of noises and make films shirtless). it's also cool that these kind of places are open on all the public holidays where others are closed so you never really have to shuffle your schedule.

like any other business, if they continue making money from it then it'll keep on going. soon as it proves to be detrimental to profit they'll cut it back to standard hours.

It would kind of be interesting to get a perspective from someone who has lived in the states as they have been around for a while there. I have heard they vary from area to area. They seem to miss the gym vibe somehow. I am used to training at gyms which are a bit more inspiring.

I belong to a 24-hour gym, and we have lots of free weights, lifting cages, deadlift platform and even a bench press bench (which has a little modification to it).

I think that if set out right that they will be here to stay. Our gym released their numbers from last year and found out that 40 people went from 9-12pm, 10 from 12-3 am, and another 20 odd from 3-6am.

Thats from their first year of opening.

I love it, however I dont tend to go over the weekend or on public hoildays because of work. But there are a number of people that use it. I love it.

I would consider going to a 24hr gym if they still had squat racks etc that were available for use 24/7.

There is one (Burn Fitness) that is just up the road from me and only 100m or so from my current gym but of course much better hours. Would be good to know you could go anytime, as long as could still crank out squats, deads, bench etc.

Important to note the difference between the '24 hour gym' chains and the gyms that are open 24hrs.

My gym , Flex, is a regular bodybuilding style gym with squat racks and benches available 24hrs. The Dbs currently only go to 100lb but they will be increasing up to 150lb soon. The bigger Dbs will be caged and only the members who prove they can use then without abusing then will have the key.

I would never even consider using a gym with limited hours any more. I don't often train after 8:30pm or before 6am but it's mainly the convenience of being open public holidays I love

Jetts= No squats, no deads, no bench. No thanks!

Yeah i agree. Jets is shit. Snap fitness is slightly better with incline and flat benches. They also have a squat rack which is locked whilst there is no staff or p.t's. Average gyms but apparently convenient..

Me personaly I think 24 hour gyms are a good thing for people who do shift work at night ie people who work in the police, fire fighters etc. There is already one 24 hour gym in Dunedin which is Jetts and from what I have heard it is very small and snap is opening a 24 hour gym in Dunedin soon.Lucky for my gym Les Mills Dunedin which is open during all public hoildays expect for xmass day which is the only day that it is closed. On my last trip to Aucks which was last year I notice that Wolfs gym is now open 24/7 overall it gives people any the avantage of training any time of day that they want.

This is a decent reason to stay 24/7.

I prefer to go at night and go at 8pm, as the gym closes at 9.

If it has the free weight combos, then it is worth it imo.

The fear is that most have machines only and so cater to the 'businessmen' who don't actually lift but want to go through the motions.

Jetts= No squats, no deads, no bench. No thanks!

and I agree here.

That's a little alarming!

They must have the lights on a motion sensor switch, which clearly is not a good idea! Surely it wouldn't cost that much more just to leave them on permanently. You should have a chat to them, and mention the magic word - "OSH".

Our lights are on a sensor and we have no problems at all. If they go off someone just goes for a walk and they turn themselves back on. BTW Ive never been there by myself yet...

I can understand why the lights would be turned out, you don't leave your lights on at home 24/7. But there is no excuse for having them turn off in the middle of a workout!

My Club which is 24/7, is set up so when someone comes in the lights are turned on for two hours - which I figured is more than enough for anyone. But they are told if they are planning on staying longer that they need only go out and re-swipe in to reset the timer.

At the end of the day it's the members who pay the power bill, so a sensible owner will always look to reduce unnecessary costs, but not at the inconvenience of members of course!
