Kettlebell training in Wellington (IKSFA)

Jon Dyer

Recommended Posts

Hi,

My name is Jon Dyer, I am 35 years old and live currently in Lower Hutt City/Wellington.

I am a certified Kettlebell coach through the IKSFA (International Kettlebell Sport and Fitness Association) http://www.iksfa.com

I am offering authentic Russian Kettlebell training for GPP (general physical preparation) or to put it more simply for basic fitness and conditioning.

Later on once someone has developed some strong basics, I can introduce them to Russian Kettlebell Sport (Girevoy Sport) in which you will be taught how to be able to perform a 10 minute set in either the long cycle jerk, short cycle jerk or the snatch.

I would love to be able to form a team here in NZ, which would be prepared to go overseas to compete.

If you would like to know more about my background, then please feel free to read my introduction in the "introduce yourself" forum or PM me for more information.

Thanks

Jon Dyer

A lot of haters regarding KB. Bro science has them running for the hills...

I hope it goes well for your venture.

I do kind of understand how some people can be against them, but that is due to some individuals trying to promote them as "the be all end all" regarding strength and conditioning, which is not the case. They are a tool and only useful as the person using them. If u want to develop real world functional strength than KB's can provide that, but so can a lot of other tools.

As for scientific evidence in relation to kettlebells and its effects, there is a site http://www.kettlebellscience.com/index.html which brings up some interesting research.

Thanks for the wishes all I can do is to keep my goals in mind and work towards them. I may in the future open a gym with some others which specialize in functional type conditioning, kettlebell sport, strongman and some martial arts (Phillippino Arnis/Kali, etc). But baby steps first, I don't want to get myself into anything too deep without testing the waters first.

Hi Jon

I'm interested in getting into a kettlebell class/group/squad. I've been doing them for a few years now but I'm looking for more consistency because my commitment has been too erratic. Have you had any luck getting a group together? I live in hataitai so would be interested in something more local. I'd be keen to hear if anything forms (though I don't see many KB users in gyms).

Hey Lawrence,

I live in Lower Hutt and work in hospitality in the evenings 6 days a week (Tuesday to Sunday) but during the day I spend time training myself (my own training is mostly centered on getting my numbers up on Girevoy lifts at the moment, but also play around with some powerlifting and strongman type training.

I have been having some talks recently with someone about setting up a Wellington based KB group (we would also do other facets of functional finess) though I need to work out some basic programes, etc.

My qualification is in GS (Girevoy Sport) but the competition lifts are best taught after minimum 3 months GPP (general physical preparation stage) to get the body ready for lifting. Running is also a good supplemental exercise for GS.

One of the reasons you dont see KB's users in gyms cause the gyms rarely stock bells and if they do they are sparse and usually of a low quality, plus they have no one to teach them how to use them.

I am looking into bringing some over, but I do not have the money to be able to afford to ship 5 tonne here and sit on them. If I could find some gyms to chip in, I could share costs.

I can do private lessons now as I do have access to some equipment and a place to train. Give me a TXT to 021 256 0056 (TXT is better as where I live the reception is crap for vodaphone)

All the best

Jon Dyer (IKSFA)

Well I'm keen to get a KB squad together. Don't need a gym just a park somewhere to start off.

I'm counting three so far in welly...

I have access to Poneke Rugby Club on a Sunday at 11 AM (this will extend to any time in the week, but I am limited to its access due to location).

Sunday is usually when I concentrate on more powerlifting type workouts (deadlift, squat, etc) and during the week I run and also alternate GS lifts (snatch and jerk) for training for biathlon.

I want to set up my own gym, but for the moment, just have to be content to train at home with what equipment I have (I got access tp 2 x 12, 2 x 16 (comp) and a 16, 20, 24 (RKC style shape).

Jon.

Hey Jon

I am going to buy a kettle bell this weekend and want to get into it. I am a mum so can not get out for trainings apart from monday nights hence the kettle bell to do workouts from home.

I know as with any exercise the correct technique is important so m I keen to learn some fundamentals as I cant afford injuries.

Cheers
