HCG drops

Apparently this releases a hormone that "saves" muscle and increase fat loss when on calorie deficit.

Not at all thinking of using it as I don't have any trouble with dieting, just wonder what everyone thinks of it. Sounds like BS to me but I could be wrong.

Utter bullshit designed to be sold to mugs who do the "hcg diet" which is where you eat 500 calories a day and take hcg injections. In order to make it even more popular they started selling oral hcg drops and even homeopathic hcg lol. Hcg cannot be taken orally and does not make you lose weight anyway so yeah, as you guessed, it's a load of horse shit

One would think that if you only eat 500 calories the drops you take might not have much to do with your weight loss. lol.

;)

But people would rather look for that magic bullet than put it down to the fact they need to eat less and exercise more. HCG is certainly not that magic bullet however, mainly because such a thing does not exist

I thought HCG was what is produced during pregnancy.... How could that make me thinner surely it would make my body think its pregnant and get fatty for the behbeh?????????

(don't actually want to take it I just have no idea on how it is even supposed to work)

Edit:

Wikipedia - As of December 6, 2011, the FDA has prohibited the sale of "homeopathic" and OTC hCG diet products and declared them fraudulent and illegal.

It can't. Some phaggot decided he would create a new diet fad (based on sketchy 50 year old claims) and used that as the "magic" ingredient. People looked straight past the fact they they are eating only 500 calories of apples or whatever and assumed the huge weight loss was due to the hCG.

Every single well-done trial has shown that hCG injections are no better at reducing appetite (the supposed magic effect) than injecting a salt-water placebo. Orally taken hCG is destroyed by saliva and stomach acid. I doubt many of the drops have hCG in them (and the homeopathic ones dont by default). Dat der placebo effect

There are still heaps of sites selling hcg drops and promoting this diet, and thousands who swear by it.

*sigh*

Have you ever tried arguing with people who swear it works? Hurts my brain so much.

I emailed a guy who distributes the drops here in Auckland and all he had to back himself up was the fact that he had seen success on the program.. Oh but you know, it's not the 500 calories a day, it's TOTALLY the drops. 8)

Argued with a few of them but just ignore them now. Too frustrating. There are peeps out there who have lost 100lbs and turned their lives around so for them nothing you say will change their minds that this is the be all and end all of dieting. Im not surprised that some asshole who sells the drops swears by them lol

brb selling 50ml of saline for $79.99 or w/e

The theory behind it is that women during pregnancy are a lot more efficient at burning bodyfat than they usually are. This is for the survival of the fetus, in case there was a shortage of food, a famon etc the limited food consumed would go towards nourishing the baby as the mother relies on the body fat for energy/survival.

And thats why the HCG diet would work best on a low calorie diet and theoraticaly it would restart the fat loss process when one's been on a low calorie diet for a while and hit a plateau.

Diet and fitness are like religeon if you have a bit of knowledg/material to work with you can totaly abuse it and run with it whichever way you please and make it sound very convincing :pfft:

  • 4 weeks later...

I would not be so quick to knock the HCG Diet. My ex wife lost 30kg in about 6 months when she used the HCG drops over 2 x 40 days "cycles". She has maintained the weight loss one year later & has actually dropped another 3kg to her lowest weight in 25 yrs. I also know several women & 1 man that has used the "diet" with very good results. Its not just a starvation diet either. Its based on high protein & complex carbs & many other disciplines are involved in the detox & diet process. There must be some benefit in using the HCG because tell me any other diet that works on 500 cals ed, that you could sustain over 40 days. The FDA will ban anything that is not mainstream big pharma product that the pharmaceutical companies can make mega bucks out of.

Necessary to go so low with cals if using hcg?

Its a very strict program. Not for the faint hearted but the Original HCG Diet is based around 500 cals ed. I'm not sure if it could still be effective with more cals. During the diet you do not even have enough cals to exercise although some I know have done walking & they still had good results.

The HCG Diet

The HCG Diet most commonly refers to the protocol that British physician Dr. Simeon identified in the mid-1950's. He discovered that when administered daily, HCG patients could maintain their health through a low calorie diet. When on a low calorie diet without HCG, patients became irritable, had hunger cravings, weakness, and/or headaches.

The use of HCG in a diet will dispose of the abnormal fat first, which will allow for a visual transformation of the body. It also helps to correct the patient's metabolism which in turn will help the patient from gaining the weight back once off a restricted diet. However, in order to maintain a healthy weight after a weight loss program, one must continue to have a well balanced diet.

Dr Simeon's protocol requires you to eat fruit, vegetables and meat, fish or poultry. As with any diet your success is dependent on how closely you abide by the diet plan and consume only food and portion sizes allowed.

HCG Diet Phases

Days 1 & 2 - Start oral, sublingual hCG drops and begin high fat, high calorie diet. This is an essential step in resetting the body's fat regulating system.

Days 3-21 ( or 42 ) - Continue hCG drops that are now triggering the body to release stored fat as "food" for the body and supplement with the low calorie diet. The burned fat is providing a constant flow of fuel so you won't feel hungry as pounds & inches melt away.

Maintenance Phase - Stop hCG diet drops. The body's fat regulation system is now adjusted. Slowly increase caloric intake, while stabilizing your new weight.

Light Exercise

It is recommended that you do only light exercise while doing the hCG Diet. Walking, Yoga ,Pilates, lighter weight lifting (resistance) is great to keep up your strength. Stay away from high calorie burning exercises (ex. Running, aerobics). Over exercising will cause the body to go into starvation mode and hold on to the fat, fighting against the hCG.

Keep Track of Weight

It is important to weigh yourself and keep track of your success. You will want to weigh yourself when you first get up in the morning (the same clothing attire every time) after you have emptied your bladder.

The Maintenance Phase

The maintenance phase in the HCG diet comes after we have completed our goal for HCG whether it follows the 20 day or 40 day program. The purpose of the maintenance phase is to restore the metabolism and balance in the body and prevent any circumstance that the body will gain the weight back.

The maintenance phase lasts 3 weeks long and it is a crucial part of the diet in order to be successful with HCG. With-out the maintenance phase the weight gain will be uncontrollable after we are off the diet. When the last day of the diet drops expire then it is said that you can eat whatever you want which is true except you must avoid foods that have sugar and starch. During the three week time frame it is imperative to have a scale with you and make sure to find a time every day to weigh yourself. It takes about 3 weeks for the weight to stabilize and cease fluctuation. Dur-ing this period patients must realize that the carbohydrates, such as sugar, bread, rice, potatoes, pastries, etc, are to be avoided at all costs. If no carbohydrates whatsoever are eaten, fats can be indulged in somewhat more liberally and even small quantities of alcohol, such as a glass of wine with meals, does no harm, but as soon as fats and starch are combined things are very likely to get out of hand. This has to be observed very carefully during the first 3 weeks after the treatment is ended otherwise disappointments are almost sure to occur.

When you end your last day of taking the drops you must remain on the 500 calorie intake diet for 3 more days before increasing your calories to allow time for the HCG to get out of the system. When you start the 4th day you are wel-come to increase your calorie intake to 1500 for the remainder of the maintenance phase. It is not recommended to have any more than 1500 at this time. You can also pick up on an exercise routine since now you have a sufficient amount of calories to support the new food intake for the diet.

Bear in mind, your weight will fluctuate the first week or two, this is normal. Do a steak, fish, or chicken day if you need to. The weight will eventually stabilize and cease to fluctuate. Watch the starch and sugar very carefully during the 3 weeks. Eat as many organic foods as possible. Eat whatever you want, without starch or sugar, during the main-tenance phase. Make sure you are eating enough. Use healthy fats and dairy products to up your calorie intake if necessary. Drink enough water.

And what is the pharmacology behind the hcg and weight loss? I doubt that a significant difference would be seen from placebo in terms of weight loss or keeping the weight off with cals that low, even if injected. Next to nothing in the real literature about sublingual bioavailabilty either. I wouldn't be surprised if they put some kind of appetite suppressant in some of the drops though, if anything at all...

Sorry but as a pharmacologist, I just don't see it having a significant effect. It's gotta be the several thousand calorie deficit
