$25 a week. Doesn't need crossfit has all the best classes in the world PLUS fully equipped gyms for any sort of training you want to do, you can to any club in the country plus spa sauna at the city - really how can you compare?

Crossfit is group training, with a trainer standing behind you yelling at you to push yourself and checking your technique. I never got that at les mills unless I paid extra for it... Does your $25 pw include unlimited small group training sessions with an instructor?

I pay $45 a week for unlimited sessions at my crossfit box, definitely worth it for the attention we get from our trainer, and the things I have learnt since joining. Crossfit introduced me to strength training and Olympic lifting...

I do see Britomart are trialling 'HIIT' now though, meant to be like crossfit. I wonder if they use the pump bars for their oly lifts :pfft:

Still not buying it - strength training - weights room!!! Have a couple of half hour sessions with a PT and away you go.......$45 a week is a lot and all you get to do is 'Crossfit' there are so many different classes at gym its not even funny......I just dont see it as good value for money - if you need someone barking at you every time you work out to motivate you - well you need to work on your motivation!

Does it matter what the bar's made of ? 32kg of weight's still 32kg of weight

But IMO it was inevitable that folks'd try to rip off CrossFit, just like the old Bodyworks Thorndon introduced a class that sounded like Zumba, looked like Zumba, but didn't call itself that to avoid being sued...

Actually, sounds like Pump to me... some of the RadicalFitness Power instructors do exactly that (especially if they know your name  ) - as I see it the main distinctions are variety (Pump is inevitably the same few combinations) and the prescription - done to RX, you can't wimp out and go light....

Ive taught pump for a year, and participated a few years...it's not like pump at all. Yes the exercises are similar, and if the instructor knows you, you're lucky. But that's about where the similarity ends IMO.

Katie, getting in proper strength or oly training isn't a matter of a couple of sessions with a pt :P I was a pt myself and I still need correcting on form occasionally -although in crossfit I am definitely the 'good form girl' that everyone nods their head at.

The thing that frustrated me about group fitness classes are that I want/need to spend half the time walking around correcting technique, there are people who don't LISTEN when I'm going through technique while teaching. Frustrating as f*ck watching it.

My advice to anyone who looks at it online and disses it because of cost or YouTube vids is, go do the free trial.

Pretty sure crossfit is a rip off of gym jones anyway. It's just circuit training with gymnastics and strength thrown in.

i guess I was referring to the quote about

trainer standing behind you yelling at you to push yourself and checking your technique.
- a GOOD pump instructor will build rapport with regular clients and correct their form, but sadly good instructors aren't that common.

Funnily enough, at a place near where I work they run a box and a circuit class in the gym two mornings a week, and a certified CrossFit instructor runs CrossFit three afternoons a week (although the gym doesn't have all the gear, no bumper plates, no rings, etc). From what I've heard, the clientèle is very different, hardly any overlap.

I'm not bagging CrossFit, far from it, it's just not my preferred workout...

All good for the regulars :) I did the same. Those who come and go are often the ones with shocking technique, and no ears

Yeah there are crossfit style classes everywhere now, even at the gym I go to! The trainer there is crossfit certified too.

At the end of the day, if you don't want it, don't do it.

I don't like the idea of powerlifting, but I am not interested in shitting on it.

People can afford to go to CF. Sweet for them.

Like I said earlier, go and check out Ludus Magnus in Auckland city, if you want an alternative to CF that in my experience is better (but without OLY lifts) and cheaper.

and yes Small, cellulite lives everywhere. It's like rust.

Though, in the same light as Hallensteins:

It's great to be a guy :)

I was going to say it's already at the Arnold Classic, but I see there's heaps of different shit there now anyway

A few crossfitters could take out the new athletic class and pump out a few tricep dips for the masses ^_^

I think crossfit is cool when done properly...

Im not the only one :

I'd love to try it some day but I don't think some of my techniques on the bigger lifts involved in some of the workouts is good enough.

wow. True love. srs

pretty sure thats gonna cost you alot more than $45pw especially at les mills.

I meant 2x half hour sessions only - and then one in a while after that - it's about $40-$50 for half hour - however that's only really good if you have some idea about training ie you've been doing pump for a while or something - if the gym is new to you then naturally you'll need more coaching

Watch the vid I posted... I think its a little bit more intense than pump....

Cross fit is pretty extreme most les mills PTs wont be pushing you that hard in that way even for 130 bucks a session.

Try the work out that Dana did... then see. If you've done pump you should know all those movements....

The DLB vid is not a good representation of crossfit (IMO). She also had seven kinds of shit blasted out of her for her technique on that vid..

I'd post links but I'm not on a computer and can't figure it out, but if you want to see typical crossfit workouts by chicks who practice it often (rather than someone giving it a go and sticking it on YouTube) , YouTube Katie hogan, Miranda Oldroyd, Camille le blanc bazinet, Annie thorisdottir, kristan clever, Andrea ager. Total BAMFs.

Props for Crossfit bringing attention to the oly lifts, that can only be a good thing.

I think Crossfit has its place, and can be very effective for many people. I don’t think it’s appropriate methodology for those of us looking for maximal strength/power, as it seems to favour a balance of strength / muscular endurance over absolute strength/power. Also Crossfit is about a functional as any other exercise method. It makes you good at Crossfit, and has limited cross over into everyday life. If you want truly functional, join the army, or take a job on a farm or as a furniture remover.

For the more strength oriented among us barbell complexes are a similar, but probably a more useful form of conditioning. Utilising the lifts we all know, short duration, high intensity, and it allows controlled progression. I’ve found them very effective, especially when running with sprints or other HITT work.

Sorry for the link to "want to sell you bogus supps" t-nation but the article is a good introduction.

http://www.t-nation.com/free_online_article/sports_body_training_performance/screw_cardio_four_complexes_for_a_shredded_physique

I tend to swap out hang cleans, with hang snatchs, as my front rack position is awfull, think of a t rex trying to stratch it’s ears. The only time a don’t tend run complexes is in the last 4-6 weeks of a strength cycle, where I’m pushing for PRs most weeks. As i’ve personally found it can hinder recovery.

^ agree. RE: Oly lifting

Crack up - t-rex :pfft: nice

Some tongue in cheek thoughts:

#1 - everyone not crossfitting is jealous of Crossfit

#2 - crossfitters wear rose-coloured glasses

#3 - crossfitters have an inferiority complex

#4 - the crossfit explosion is what bodybuilding was in the 70s

#5 - crossfitters are the fittest crossfitters in the world

#6 - the "heavy" wods in crossfit are not heavy

#7 - Fran is not a world recognised standard - 2 x BW squat, 1.5 x BW bench and 2.5 x BW deadlift are world recognised standards.

#8 - crossfit is fun

#9 - crossfitters look better than anyone else

#10 - zumba is the devil
