Overloading the quads good or bad?

Recommended Posts

Hy guys

Ive been training for about 3 years now and for most of that time I have been doing balls to the walls legs training a few buckets have been filled in that time, I think that it has been working quite well but started to platau lately I have spoken to a couple of trainers and they all told me to stop over loading my legs and stay in that 12 rep range as heavy as can.

I can see the benifits of changing it up for a wile but just thought id get some thoughts on it.

Would you like to clarify what rep range you have been training in? When you say you plateaued, do you mean strength, size or both? Do you squat, if so how much?

Well I change up my routine all the time but this is one example

I train my legs once a week it takes that long to recover

e.g

-leg ex 1 warm upx30reps 5 work setsx8-12reps final set drop set dont count reps on this just go till cant

my weight changes day to day depends how im feeling what kind of day im having how much iv eaten

-Rear squats 1warm upx20reps 100kg 3 work sets 140kg8-10reps 2 heavy sets 180kg 3reps 200kg 1-2reps

-Front squats 5 work sets 140kg 8-10reps

-Leg press 3 drop sets start with 12reps full stack then 3 rep one plate of each time.

I train calves after this

Like i said I change it up all the time but this is a prity normal day.

I think what the trainers meant is lay off the drop sets dude

Use them sparingly, doing them all the time will likely lead to overtraining and a halt to growth

Do you train all your bodyparts like this?

26 sets for legs and then you train calves?.. this would be a good workout once in a while to spark new growth but imo youd get better results with a short, heavy workout. unless you are on gear it is way to many sets

Please post pics of your quads, or better yet, a video (youtube) will be enough. Say nzbb in it so we know it is you. Then you will get some real answers.

If that's your "Leg" training then I see a huge issue. You don't give hammies any consideration. I theorise that they have become a piss weak body part on you and as a result, your quad development has plateaued. Because your quads have been given so much attention, your hammies fail long before your quads do therefore they are not being stimulated enough.

Try this.

Romainian Deadlifts on a box for a full stretch (3 sets for 6-10 reps)

Hamstring Curl - Lying, Seated or GHR (4 sets 8-15 reps)

Squats (3 sets 8-10 reps)

Then insert 2-3 quad exercises

Not really based around hammy strength but this will ensure they get stimulated more as I'm guessing size is the game you wanna play

Lol. Reason I ask is Toms quads are looking a lot bigger in his Avi than earlier pics. Going well bro. Keep up those heavy squats but don't forget to keep hitting those 12-20 rep sets too!
