Thanks heaps for this post i have very little photos form either my 98 or 2000 win so was good to see some. If anyone has any pics from 2000 please id love to see them you could email me on info@miked-fitness.com

Nice to read a thread that celebrates hard work without any bashing.

Great to see people like Steve Lynch (still a very good friend of mine and mentor) getting a mention. I was lucky enough to spend a day or two with BJ and he even invited me over to Aust to train with him, unfortunately it never happened. one of the best guys i ever stood against who hasn't had a mention was Daryle Tamouli in the NABBA 2003 Mr NZ his size and condition was the best that i have personally stood against in NZ and i have been lucky enough to stand beside some very good competitors in nz.

I have been lucky enough to share the stage and compete with over the yrs with Mark Anderson, Mike Kingsnorth, Harry B, Mike Alsop, Damian Porter, Paul Wood, Warren Afook, Phil K, Dan hibbs, Phily N to name a few.

Unfortunately a couple of great NZ competitor who i would have loved to compete with through my time as a NZ Ammiture would have been Hugh Willis, Big Kiwi Justin (because i respect them as competitors and like them as people, and i think the competition between people who respect each other is always great fun)and a rematch (and we talked of it often) with (gd friend) Mark Anderson..... i know he wants that win over me lol.

Hey Mike,

thanks heaps for posting

have watched you compete since the junior men days to your rise to the pros. congrats on a very successful innings and much respect.

I have your 98 win on vid. the 'War' routine was quality posing

Darryl will get a post just haven't really started on the NABBA title holders.

Would be awesome if some of those guys made a comeback like Mark Stewart who has just shown what muscle maturity is all about.

I missed out on seeing you as an amateur Mike D but I saw your guest pose at the IFBB Auckland champs 09 and you blew my mind.

Darryl looked awesome at the IFBB West Australian champs 2010 where he narrowly missed out on the overall title then again at the IFBB Aus Nationals where he narrowly missed out again.

I have heard he will be competing back in NZ again this year. Even planning on doing the CNIs this year until it was cancelled. Maybe the NABBA WFF nationals??? Will be great to see him back on stage over here.

Hey Guys would love to get hold of copies of those routines, we always had a bit of fun up stage ah Harry?

Daryle looked awesome at the OZ nats in 2010 i judged over there that yr and i had him just ahead in first, but it was really close bit tighter in the legs esp from behind and he would have edged in i recon. When he is on he is ON!

DARRYN ONEKAWA

2009 NZIFBB Mr NZ

Very impressive size and conditioning earned Darryn his win in 2009. He had to beat out some tough competition including Nathan O’Hearn.

Last I heard Darryn is busy carving himself out a pro career and living the dream competing against some of the big names.

Big fan of Daz, met him when he was still a teenager and he had that impressive wide frame and was a real strong guy in the gym even way back then. Love what he's doing in living his dream in the IFBB pro ranks and improving every outing. Certainly get's crazy ass conditioning for a guy his size and wow I saw him offseason walking down taranaki st and thought it was a building moving. Absolute monster but a gentleman with it.

He'll go down in NZ history as a great Pro and yet he's still early in his career. Good on him

Wow. I just found this post. Thank you for your kind words.

I don't have many photos from back in the day, but here's a selection if you are putting together a list.

My '93 nationals were 20 years ago this year. Yikes! Where did the time go?

I'm happy to report have never stopped weight training training in the 20 years since. Never will.

I appreciate everyone who keeps this forum alive. Kudos to you!

Great physique, Stephen. Very nice proportions and symmetry.

Out of interest, how do you look 20 years on? (Hope that's not too intrusive a question - I'm just curious as to how much of that shape you've hung on to, and how easy it was to maintain)
