is it still ok?

Tuna is a great source of protein... but Sealord gets its tuna from companies using one of the worst fishing methods – a method which catches endangered sharks, turtles, juvenile tuna and other ocean life as well.

These creatures are often thrown back into the ocean inured, dead or dying. That’s exploitation, not expertise.

That clip is from End of the Line, isn't it? If you haven't seen that documentary, it's well worth watching. Definitely an eye opener.

I'm trying to minimise the amount of tuna I eat now. I've switched more towards salmon. It's still not great for the ocean, but at least salmon stocks are easier to monitor than tuna, and hopefully there's less by-catch.

That's my rationale anyway - I'll continue this way until someone comes along and bursts my bubble!

I said I eat a lot of tuna and the doc said it would be that, bit of a dodgy self owned clinic that I won't go back to. Next time I will get proper results with the normal range etc. I'm not sure if they can tell what the source of the mercury is from though.

The acceptable range is 0 -1

That's no joke either, anything above that is not good as mercury has such a long half-life (62 days).

I've been given the latest research summary papers (2010-2011) on mercury but not yet read all of them. These papers summarise the latest findings every year and are not a single research paper itself.

Interestingly they are finding high levels in fresh water fish now, including salmon.

There is no denying that the bulk of the catch is caught with nets but there are a lot of smaller countries that do only use long lines.

Good quality catch air freighted to Japan for big dollars and rest sold locally or sent to canneries for tinning.

Can't beat fresh Tuna!

apart from a nice steak
