Too much egg as protein source?

Hi :

Does anyone have experience as to whether using whole egg (including the yolk) as protein source can be bad for you? and at what quantity.

Personally I love eggs, especially the yolk :D , eating egg white is just never the same... :(

At the moment I am trying to use food protein as much as possible . I am eating about 4-5 eggs per day now. Few months ago I had my check up, and the lipid profile were all ok, but the Dr couldn't really tell me the long term effect of eating too much egg...etc

Most of the info from medical journal seems have have mixed views on this. some said the cholesterol in egg can accumulate and add to heart disease, and some claim that the dietary cholesterol is not linked to heart disease, with some even claim that the lecithin in egg yolk can improve cholesterol control

So for any of you that use whole egg as protein souce, your experience would be most valuable.

Thanks

Hi Alan, I've been on a diet that involved eating 6 whole eggs a day. I did that 5-6 days a week for 4-5 months. At the end of that time, my cholesterol was up slightly, but still well within healthy levels.

IMO, as long as you get checked regularly, you should be fine - and if you're not fine, you'll see it in the checkup. :)

Egg whites - no worries.

Egg yolks - my 2c worth, are a different story, but what i understand is that, after being vilified for years, science is changing its mind about the cholesterol issue, for a couple of reasons:

a. cholesterol is a genetic issue - your genes will have a bearing on how you handle yolks. if you've a family history of cholesterol problems, go carefully'

b. the nature of egg yolks depends, like many things, on how they're farmed. It seems that free-range eggs are less problematic in terms of LDL (the "bad" cholesterol) than (especially in the US and Europe) battery-farmed eggs. Of course, that drives the cost up.... and since (roughly) half the protein in an egg's in the yolk, only eating the whites drives the price per protein serve up even more.

There's a lot of good reading on Livestrong.com here and here

Egg yolks are a great source of other nutrients - which is a plus.

On the negative side, there are suggestions that egg yolks in excess can be harmful to the liver. I can't find an accurate gauge of what "in excess" means, tho.

My own experience, mostly with liquid egg whites, showed no effect on cholesterol, despite occasional 4-6 whole egg meals - but that gene thing means your results may vary.

As mentioned above

I dont think its a black and white thing at all

Im doing 6-8 whole eggs per day and have done for the last 3 or so months and have had great results in muscle and strength.

But I have been checked and so far so good, I do keep fit with HIIT training to keep the heart healthy

Others may not be able to handle so many, my advice just get a check up an let the results tell the story
