What's the current price threshold for ordering sups?

Yep, you're pretty much in customs charges territory there mate.

I hear some people say $400 is the threshold, but I'm sure it's closer to $360? $400 was valid back before GST went up. Now that it has gone up, it means you hit that chargeable threshold earlier... could be wrong.

Either way though... I'm fairly certain anything over $400 is chargeable.

Gasp may be able to clear things up if he reads this.

Just to expand a bit on CF's original question, what are the extra charges you get stung if your purchase is over the threshold? Is it just 15% GST or are there additional customs charges on top of that?

I believe you pay 15% of what ever is over $400. So cf wants to spend $430 he only pays GST for the $30.

Take note though CF, you have to add shipping in the total price since customs factor that in as well with the $400 threshhold.

emailed customs last year. this is their reply:

Thank you for your enquiry.

Whether supplements and the like are permitted into NZ is a matter for the Ministry Of Health.

I have forwarded your email to them for their reply.

In general terms supplements attract a rate of duty of 5% which is applied to the cost of the goods.

Plus GST of 15% which is applied to the cost of the goods and to the cost of the insurance and freight and on any duty that is payable.

All figures converted into NZ$.

If the total duty and GST payable per shipment is less than $60 then no customs charges wil be payable.

If the total duty and GST payable per shipment is $60 or more then we will collect those charges and you will also incur a Import Entry Transaction and Bio-security fee totalling $38.07.

Last time I got something in and didn't declare is under $400, it was $450 I think and they charged me 15% GST on the lot including shipping and also a "admin fee" of something like $22+GST to look at it. Ended up being $137 or something like that.

yeah this is definatly incorrect. what karm posted is correct. make sure your order is under $400

If the total duty and GST payable per shipment is less than $60 then no customs charges wil be payable.

This (well, the email from Customs specifically) would kind of suggest that the max order is closer to $300 before you start getting charged?

15% GST (charged on shipping and goods), and 5% duty (charged on goods only). Let's say you make an order that comes to $280 NZD for the goods, and $40 NZD for shipping = $320 total. Charges would be:

320 x .15 = $48 in GST

280 x .05 = $14 in Duties

= $62 total, so they'd charge.

...orrr am I missing something? :shifty:

Often cheaper to pay shipping for a second order.

Can work, but you'll need to send them a little ways apart from each other - I know of a couple of people that have tried to make two separate orders at once, thinking each one will sneak through, but Customs have added both orders together and charged them...

That sounds right to me, in that case you'd be charged the $62+ an 'Import Transaction Fee' of $38.07 totaling $100.07 is my understanding. Of course the duty percentage changes depending on what you're ordering, but yes, 5% for supplements.

Would definitely be wise to keep this in mind when ordering since the minimum you'd get charged is around $100.

Well i have receipts stating otherwise. My experience with customs also is that i have different answers from jsut about all of them. So i deal with my freight forwarder directly now. Like i said. i have only ever been charged GST for the amount over and above $400, nothing more nothing less.

Like i could make an order right now with an overseas supp shop any amount and i would know what i have to pay even before it lands. Makes the transit times real quick since it doesnt have to sit and wait till they call me. I guess everyone hasa or had their own experience but mine at least has been consitantly the same.

grrr , a 10lb bag of ON protein has charges that is nearly another 100 bucks by itself...but yeah DMX I should of been clearer, when I said 400 I meant total as in cost+postage (obv it's the postage fees that hits our pocket the hardest)

It depends where you now a days. I have shifted my business from BB.com since they redid their whole website. They changed their shippers as well back then at as a result have become almost unafordable with shipping. I remember i a time i could buy a 10lbs bag ON plus pre workouts and creatines and pay like $60ish for shipping and my package weighs like 20lbs. Now a 5lbs pakage will cost almost $90 for shippng alone. I would have thought a company that have shipped out over 10mil products worldwide would get cheap as rates from their shippers.

I now use iherb by far the cheapest for shipping of all online stores based in the US. I believe thas why so many of the fellas on here always buys from them. I Still like BB.com and they have been good to me but their shipping is very very very steap. But you can give nutraplanet a go to and i also recently came across a gem of a online store that sells supps and just about the kitchen sink and their shipping rates are real good to but im goona keep that to myself for now. Its like the Costco (US based) for supplements.

by the time you add the extra charges in and add the pain in the ass factor is it still alot cheaper to order overseas?

my brother reckons hes getting unflavoured nutrawhey for $21/kg...same price/kg as I got fonterra bag for. getting 20x1kg bags for me, 10 for him. I'm certainly not gonna waste my money buying some heavy metal riddled protein from the states

Yip, most def. I really do believe the quatity you can buy with your dollar at this moment compared to NZ is well worth the pain in the ass. Its only impatient people who will have a problem with buying overseas cause they want things now and not 5 days later. Hell i could even as far as to say that for me it makes no difference waiting 5 days cause i have received shipments faster from the states than i have from the north island. Im based South.
