(just for illustrative purposes, this picture is also sensationalised)

I think its more to do with education. Regular people eat 30+ meals/snacks a week. I'm pretty sure people don't choose to stuff thier faces with fast or convenient food on every single one of these. Diet is a lot about Habit and most people don't care enough about it to learn more about it so it needs to really taught to a decent level of understanding at a younger age/school. This is why people go to bbers "don't you get sick of eating the same meals all the time" when they don't realise that they themselves have a repertoire of meals they cycle through themselves.

I don't think people want to become fat or obese they just don't know how to make the choices to be healthier from earlier on. Lots of people I know or who have come to me from the gym who are overweight or obese don't/have never actually eat that much fast food. They actually home make a lot of meals they just don't have a clue about portion control and what affect the foods they are putting into thier bodies actually have. If people were educated to the kind of diet/macros/portions that actually would actually keep them healthy rather than having your "5 a day" or "the food pyramid" which promotes carbs as the basis for all meals, then maybe it would be a better situation.
