Good article truth about pro bodybuildin..

Old article in OP that pops up every now and then. I remember this from when I last competed in 2000, my friend who competed as an IFBB Pro remembered similar rumours being spread 10 years prior to that in Shawn ray's era.

I talked to the IFBB Pro about it and he said for the most part it was a load of bollocks. Particularly the dribble about Pro's training slack and just living on shit food (with high protein) and being purely a product of drugs.

He acknowledged extreme drug use at top level was part of the sport, and that GH was a key factor in pre-contest prep for getting top pros looking the way they do on stage now.

He cited Dennis James who he saw at training for 6 months, and said the guy would chew through training partners like nobody's business. Dennis trained twice a day, heavy weights & lots of volume. When the pro in question was asked by Dennis if he'd like to train with him his reply was "when I'm able to train at your level". By his own account he was busting his ass but still wasn't at that level (there's more than one of us on this forum who've been owned trying to train with the local Pro in question as well...... how's your back after 20 real working sets bro?!! :pfft:  ).

What he also said was that Dennis was so in tune with his own body it was incredible. He could put on weight or drop weight so easily and never seemed to be run down pre-comp, unlike the walking (or stumbling!) skeletons we often see backstage.

Anyway just thought I'd put some feedback I got firsthand from a Pro, who's actually trained and competed with with other top Pro's, so that noobs don't think Pro Bodybuildings only about excessive drug use, eating McDonalds and pimping yourself out to pay the bills (sorry to shatter your dream Vader! :pfft:  ).

Hard training not McD's for Mr James.....

It's all a relative thing with regards to the training nate225. If you compare Ronnie's training to Phil Heath's for example you'd say that Phil is just a slacker. That's mostly the thinking that's going on in that interview.

I think as long as you train at a level that builds you up as much as possible without burning you out and avoiding injury that's the right way to go for longevity. That's how Dennis James trains, he doesn't do insanely heavy stuff like Ronnie did, DJ's found a sweet spot and added volume to his routine... just the right amount of volume.

Some people think that's training like a pussy, but to me that's training smart.

my 2c...

The problem with saying it's all about drugs is that people read it and believe it so they hammer the gear and nothing... then they figure it must be more gear.. still nothing.. so they think damn here I am on 3 gms of test and puny so those damned pros must be taking 6gms. We all know lots of guys who take loads of drugs and still look like newbys so doesn't that automatically answer the question about the need to be mindful of your eating and training?

I also think unless you are in someones body when they are training you don't know how much effort they are putting in. Not everyone carries on and makes a ton of noise while lifting their weights... some guys are super quiet (me) and some guys are noisy mofos.. it's just to the individual.

Last thing I guess is that the top tier pro guys are just genetic elites. Drugs don't make up for genetic deficiencies.

I have trained with a few pros... most were very basic in their useage, nothing exotic or outlandish, not even crazy amounts. I've also trained with some shit amateurs who use up to 4gms/wk of test with 10iu gh/day and an assortment of other drugs and look average.

I've seen Dennis James do 6 plates a side front squats for 8 reps for 5 sets, and shoulder press 4 plates a side on the Smith machine and he made it look easy... Looked insane weights to me.

You're not getting the point there matey. It's relative to one's own strength. He's able to do those weights with big volume - those aren't insane weights to him. If he was doing 2-3 shit reps then yea that would be "hard" for him.. but that's where he's at so he does those weights.

He doesn't do a ronnie and deadlift 900lbs a couple of weeks out from competition. that sort of stuff.

No, I think you wrong again...Dennis had done heavy "shit" prior to comps...I seen it! I lived in Thailand for several months around 2004 prior to his Mr O comps. Not sure what your point is... You pick on Dennis James as not doing as heavy type of training as Ronnie Coleman?

I thought IDW was just trying to say that DJ isn't well-known for a heavy style of training like Ronnie C was...no big deal

After reading the whole thread I was going to ditch my diet and training and just increase my gear usage, but that's just me

That's what I was trying to say! Good someone understands lol

Im just a bit angry today cuz my damn scrambled eggs are fckd! I was making my usual morning snack of 10 srambled eggs last night... cracking them into the bowl... and about the 7th one was bad.. like all grey and crap.. I thought I could scoop the damn thing out and just continue on. but no... one bad egg ruins the lot!! one lesson I've now learnt. :/

Dennis James was my inspiration in the late 90's early 2000s. His body shape & type was what I aspired to be like :D (he's a bit bigger than me but I'm older  ) Don't care what you say, you cannot get a physique like that without lifting heavy weights every day & sure a lot of drugs. Although Nates pic of him is a tad morphed he has & still does come on stage with an awesome presence & as my good friend Aln has stated, this is from consistant hard work in the gym over many years. Its rather ironic that Ronnie Coleman is the man in hospital with some pretty serious back issues & that Dennis is still competing Mr O (11 in 2010) & top comps like the Europa in 2011 in arguably his best shape ever.

Yep, exactly, Dennis trained smarter. No one said he trained without lifting heavy weights. He just didn't lift like Ronnie. Ronnie has obviously paid the price a bit lately. Good on DJ, he's one of my fav bodybuilders... great physique.

Don Cestone has hit a real raw nerve with #2) The role of male prostitution in male bodybuilding.

Where do I even start here? My first exposure to this sordid side of bodybuilding occurred when I started receiving 'fan mail' at the gyms I used to train at. Now at first I was thrilled, in that people out there were actually contacting me. I was just just a 19 year old fledgling bodybuilder after all. The first few letters were simple. They indicated that they saw me at a particular show and were very impressed with my showing. Then they went on asking me about my training, like what I did for this body part, and so on, all innocently enough. So I answered these letters with enthusiasm, feeling that I was helping another bodybuilder, one with his own training questions. But the tone of the following letters then changed significantly. No longer were they asking training questions, but rather somewhat more personal ones. And now there were offers of dinners, weekend retreats and finally 'suggestions of getting to know me better.'

I really at first was confused and I have to admit that I was disappointed with all that, so I ended any further contacts. Then as time went by and I appeared in more contests, a guy I knew, a good bodybuilder himself, casually commented to me something like: 'Mike, a nice handsome blue-eyed blond boy like yourself can make a lot of money. There are people out there who will give you a lot of money, take you on worldwide vacations, buy you nice cars, clothes, etc., etc.,........and you'll never have to work another day in your life.' Now being a kid from New Jersey I must tell you I was so naive at the time I had no idea what he was talking about. Guess there was a big difference in awareness from NYC to Jersey as separated by the Hudson River, ha!

Then an event took place at a contest in NYC that probably took me off the radar, so to speak, of any so-called interested parties, a fact that would be confirmed later. I had just won a show and was standing in the lobby of the building, big trophy in tow, along with my girlfriend, my younger sister and a few of her friends. Then this guy approaches me, almost in a frenzy and excited state, and blatantly says how 'hot' I was and that he'd do anything, pay any amount I asked, to be alone with me!! I became furious with that, not so much about what he had said, but the fact that he did so in front of my family, disregarding and ignoring them completely. My reaction was swift and I threatened him accordingly and soon he was on his way. (My reaction today might be a bit different though. I would probably just be 'flattered' but say 'no thank you', ha) Now of course, this surely could have been an isolated incident, but apparently the word of it got out. Sometime later, the bodybuilder I mentioned above happened to run into me and said he had heard about the incident. But what he told me about it really surprised me. He said that the word was now out that I was not one to approach with any suggestions of sexual favors, from those who would be interested in such things, and that I therefore blew (no pun intended, ha!) any opportunities that might be out there for me.

He also said something about me being violently anti 'homo'! Actually that last statement is very untrue. In fact there were 2 occasions I recall when I intervened and saved a couple of gay men from being beaten by a gang of young thugs. I felt so sorry for these guys, they were both in tears and couldn't thank me enough. Hey, no problem.

So now I was being exposed to a side of bodybuilding that I never even knew existed. To me I always thought it was a SPORT, a sport I loved, and that any sexual connections or references were ridiculous and had no place in it. Man, was I clueless. I didn't even 'know' that I didn't 'know', ha!

Well now I'm hearing stories about so & so, that this guy or that guy were 'Hustlers', that is, exchanging sexual favors for money. They never had to work, they could train and sleep all day if they chose, and were in some cases being 'kept'. And that was the first time I ever heard the terms 'Hustlers', 'hustling' or 'being kept'. Yeah, there was a whole world out there that I never knew existed. Eventually I would hear more and more stories and they included the top names in the game, many my heroes. I didn't know or care what to believe anymore. It was almost as shocking as when I was a kid and found out that there really wasn't a Santa Claus. The age of innocence was over. Yet actually as I got older I became more open minded and liberal in my thinking. I might not partake in, or condone such activities, I have a choice with all that, but I'd at least have to acknowledge that it did go on. Also, folks like to gossip. Since I never witnessed these happenings, whose to say for sure if they really took place. Maybe, maybe not. I once heard a conversation backstage, and from guys I thought credible, that 'so & so', very famous and top bodybuilders at the time, had recently appeared in a privately produced video of gay pornography, and that it was out there for all to see. I was really shocked to hear that, but must admit I never actually saw any of it.

Well I gather what I'm saying here is that these activities do exist, that they probably always did, and always will. It's just another side of human nature. I say 'judge not, lest thee be judged', 'live and let live' and so on. But it was a big shock to me back then to hear it all.

^^ Good read. I dont think anyone disputes this sort of thing happens, shit it probably happens in all professional sports (I'm sure we've all heard the Equestrian rumours from many moons ago, or the ex-AB claims etc). Maybe it happens more in BBing because of the large cost at elite level (must be rife in motorsports then! ) or because we're such a good looking bunch! :pfft: .

But to suggest its the norm for a Pro is over the top. I know a few IFBB Pro's and none of them seem to be selling ass to lie around the house all day & take worldwide vacations! :pfft:
