Octagon style bars at City Fitness

Whats the go with those Octogon style O Bars that City a rocking??

I hit a workout over in Napier with a mate and found them to be terrible on my wrist etc. One of their members saw me wingeing and said to obviously sharp my wrists up for the bench, then he started on how they slide down his back when squatting. LOL

Am wondering whats the idea behind these?

ps...Yes I had a nice warm cup of concrete before I went in so I don't need to harden up

Funny I thought the same thing when I was in town

Did deadlifts with it and it was ok, mind u wouldn't wanna do squats with it and after a week I'm sure the bar would piss me off

Yep think there trying to get rid of all the big boys and get the twice a week trainers and lock them in for 3 years

Slowly gets members off the free weights, moves the bigger lifters out of the gym and everyone else to the Machines, where they want to be in the future.

mmmmmmmm I heard about some Gyms having a "Lunk Head alarm" if you grunt it will sound and you get kicked out.

Seems like attempt to mask a health club as Gym IMO,

8.

I reckon you're right. subtle yet effective way to tip the balance in favour of folk who pretend to train.

i don,t get it what do they look like and how are they different from an Olympic bar?

I'm guessing that instead of the bar being cylindrical, it's octagonal? Other than being annoying when you were benching, was it easier to hold your grip longer on say deadlifts?

Sounds gimmicky either way.

Yeah its around the same size in lenth but its has like six sides 3 sides bigger that the other 3. They bloody suck to use, harder on the wrists and as for squat it seems to slide. Havnt tried deads. Not keen to hit it again lol.

lol that would be a hexagon. but if you look at the bar in cross section (side on) you will see that it is circular except it has 3 flat spots/sides on it (so 3 curved sides too).

only phaggots use it

Oh sweet yeah Hexagon lol def pure phaggotry :pfft: :pfft: :pfft: :pfft:

City Fitness Kapiti have them to.

They are gay as f*ck and to make matters worse the dumbbell handles are exactly the same. I'm sure the Olympic bars are only 16 kg in weight.

Luckily they have a proper hammer strength bar so not all is lost.

Hard to tell by the picture but may give you an idea wtf we are on about

I remember when they first brought one into Cityfitness Jville, tried one set of Overhead Press with it and never touched the thing again (except to move it off the rack).

Makes me thankful for the good bars we've got at The House

I guess I'm the only one who actually likes them! There's still one at J'ville, but they've also brought some other new bars in which are completely hopeless, no grip whatsoever and just picking up the bar on it's own it feels like I'm going to drop it - so I charge about trying to find the hex one. It's not my favourite, but it beats the hell out of the slippery ones.
