Home Gyms

Hey I'm after some opinions from those who have done some training with a home gym set up.

Reason being is that this year I'm going to be busier than ever and I NEEEEED to get back into training after my prolonged break. At this stage I'm thinking to just get a simple cage, bar and dumbell set up.

My worries so far is that, I'll be missing out on some isolation work. I love the leg press and ext machine for leg day. Cable work was also a fav

So whats everyone's opinions or experiences with a home set up, also any advice from those who have trained with home gyms. What additions to get etc. (thinking chains)

Does it give the same results, or the same experience?

Cheers All

Despite having free memberships to numerous different gyms I do the majority of my training at home. I just have a cage an adjustable bench (adjusts from decline through to vertical) an olympic bar, 2 olympic dumbbell handles (which fit the olympic plates of course) a T bar row attatchment an ez bar and 260kg of plates. Ive found this set up more than adequite as I base most of my training around compound movements. The convenience of training at home is second to none, particularly if you want to train twice a day. I find it easier to get into the zone and focus on my training at home, as if I train at gyms where I work you invariably get people coming up to ask you questions about this and that or just wanting to talk in general and I feel like an asshole if I just blow them off with "sorry im training mate, dont talk to me". And if you are performing training routines like EDT (super setting 2 exercises back to back non stop for 20 mins) then training at home is a godsend.

Scout trade me bro for a 2nd hand cage and barbell. And if home training is permanent, just keep an eye out for stuff, cos you can honestly rob people of good equipment :D

Not sure on your strength lv, but some home cages come with cables. Most are shitty plastic weight plates of a max around 50kg, But I managed to salvage a 120kg stack of cast iron plates off an old gym set that magicly slid right onto it :shifty:

And you can bb lunge all day along with squats, no machine required

I got my stuff from "No.1 Fitness Sales" can't remember how much was but was good value, nothing has broken yet :)

Good stuff, $400 on trademe, $450 from their site. Definitely looks like a good bench and I like the spotters. Think I'll order one for myself.

I bought a semi-commercial leg press/hack squat machine from No 1 Fitness $995 and picked up a half dozen 20kg plates, it is a solid piece of equipment, im selling my chest press bench/frame on trade me which comes with a leg extension, def worth checking out other equip on trade me, plenty of ex christmas pressies im sure.

One of my biggest regrets in life was selling all my home gym set up. Had a mean bench set up , adjustible dumbbells and a shit load of bars etc. All gone . I neglected them and now i am looking at starting again. Bench , Powercage, 200kg of olympic weights, Definately looks cheapest on that no1 fitness imports. Thanks Bigkiwi.

Yeah no doubt. That's sounds like a great set up.

Mind if I ask; Do you own a house? I'm thinking about moving that shit around if i needed to move. My cars low enough without having 100+kgs in it :pfft: :pfft:

I think i may have found a "con" lol

I train at uni in Auckland during the semester, when I'm back in Palmerston North I train in my shed setup.

Although I'm not very good at training by myself I absolutely love having my setup, and I have a few mates who train with me most of the time when I'm back home. I have the benefit of only really needing to do barbell work, so I only have a home-made squat rack and barbell + plates.

If I lived in PN full time. I think I would probably join a gym anyway for the camaraderie, however the shed gym would still get used fairly frequently. (only place in PN I can go insane and drop weights from overhead).

I have a powercage, inclineable bench, bar, plates and adjustable dumbells and I have never had any issues. I only recently got the cage also, was using a rack up till then. Pretty much same setup as Big Kiwi

Also got a lot of stuff from No 1 Fitness in Chch which is by far the cheapest place I have ever got anything. Got my brand new powercage for $300
