Hi all,

As a newbie to powerlifting and planning on first Novice comp in March, does anyone have tips on websites that may be informative? I'm also looking for a decent pair of training gloves, so any brands you recommend would be great.

Have joined a supportive/knowledgable gym so hoping to get the guidance i need there to lift well.

Have a great week all. :)

Have you been on The powerhouse site?

Hi. Looking at the Auckland Novice 3lift in March. And just wanting training gloves for training, knew i couldn't use them in comps :) Training at Genetics in Manukau.

Good on you! IMO you need to build up the callouses on your hands as that will help you grip the bar when you are lifting heavy(er) weights. I also think it good practice to just use chalk and get to grips with holding weights like that (bad pun I know) I was reading about a PLer who had a meet and decided to take 1.5 weeks off training to rest up before the meet and her callouses softened up, then at the meet while deadlifting her hands got totally ripped to pieces and she dropped her last lift. It took ages for her hands to heal too. I think it's good to toughen the hands up- and callouses are cool on girls 8)

Thanks runvee. Wouldn't mind a few callouses to show all my hard work lol. Looking forward to the whole experience. Been interested for years but was overweight, smoking and unfit to the extreme. Now i've lost 25kg and smokefree so 100% fitter than this time last year. Can't wait til March

That's awesome! What a year this will be for then! 25kg is alot of weight to lose  how long have you been smoke free?

I think alot of us here have come from unhealthy lifestyles, I used to smoke 50 a day and was +18kg heavier than I am now, totally sedentary too

hey wahagirl

theres acouple of the boys that train at Genetics who would be able to stare you in the right direction (all who compete at the national lvl and top fellahs) and help you out with the rules etc, have a chat to either Seteki langi, neil laueki or joe tafua.. and lance stewart aswell.

hope that helps

Thanks BigJohn, will see if i can find them when i go in next week

Im not too sure who is still training at genetics but If you want your best chance of seeing them try monday nights between 6-7pm, thats usually the time they will train.

Or alternatively you can check out the auckland powerlifting facebook page http://www.facebook.com/#!/groups/68721286744/ for updates and to ask questions.

Train hard and hope to see you on the platform in march 8)
