OK, fair point about not being in the same arena as private sector companies - but:

a. public sector salaries are more closely managed than private sector ones, in a number of ways.

First, the Treasury sets budgets, within which state sector entities have to stay. No choice - no options - they can't just arbitrarily hike the price of their product, or close a line when it's not productive to keep it running. They're held accountable for the delivery of those services - whereas Telecom can out-source its call centres to India.

Secondly, thru central Agencies (Treasury and the State Services Commission), ministries are regulated to a great extent. Yes, under Labour there was more latitude given to Chief Executives, except that rule #1 applies - there's no more money, so if you want to pay more, cut staff numbers, oh, and by the way you can't choose to DO less...

But, one question: if you slash salaries, even if only for "executives" - what ARE they ? And, what will happen once the quality talent flees ?

If you were to size the Christchurch City Council, with complexity, number of employees, range of products and services - and then compare it to comparable private-sector enterprises in this country, what would the salaries look like ? And if the jobs are the same, and the talented ones won't take it for what you're going to pay them because of that discrepancy, what would the answer be?

Note that I'm not debating that there's a fair proportion of idiots, often overpaid ones, in the public sector... but probably no more than average :)

Oh, and btw, John Key's basic salary in July 2010 was $393k.

This is the main complaints about capitalism - it encourages and allows the unfair distribution of wealth. It's a completely irrational, flawed system that's rife with contradictions and inequalities.

However, we must understand that we are part of that system and therefore must adhere to it's most basic rules. i.e. if you want to attract/keep good workers, you gotta pay them accordingly.

Added to this, if these top dollar public servants increase efficiency, then they save the government money. In effect, cancelling out their pay rise.

Job Sizing / Evaluation, internal & external relativities, and competition for talent set salaries. 'nuff said.

IDW sounds like you need to join UNITE union! Lol

Nah man I just googled that UNITE union thing and it's not for me.

I'm all for capitalism and using up all the oil. I think worrying about global warming is a load a bull - it's undoubtable that the world is warming. I like the greenhouse effect, because I like green and I like greenhouses. Sure, some lowlying cities are in danger of flooding etc... they just need to relocate. It's inevitable really... there's no way that oil consumption will go down until we suck every last drop out of the earth.I want it to be a bit warmer... to damn cold here in NZ! lol

I just don't like public servants getting large pay packets. The public service in my opinion should be run by guys who have either made enough money in private business and want to give something back to the community (by working in a public service job) or by people who knowingly make a career out of the public service and accept from the outset that it's not the route to get rich by.

Why the hell we support people getting rich working in the public service is beyond me. All the checks and balances and systems are put in place, or should be in place in the services that they run. The people that run these services are just administering the services really... there's no entrepreneurial effort going on.

so basically you want nz to be run by idiots?

What kind of drugs are you on? Did you even read what I wrote?

Let me reiterate by writing between the lines in red so that the meaning jumps out at you.

The public service in my opinion should be run by guys who have either made enough money in private business i.e. proven themselves to be good businessmen and already have enough money, so have no desire for huge pay packets and want to give something back to the community (by working in a public service job) or by people who knowingly make a career guys who have spent years, if not their whole career, in the public service and know it like the back of their hand, but are not after getting rich by it out of the public service and accept from the outset that it's not the route to get rich by.

not on any drugs, yourself?

lol at thinking someone who is successful in buisness will work for next to nothing and lol at thinking that people in public service sector will stay if they can make more in the private sector.

If you pay peanuts, you get monkeys

I'm not saying pay peanuts. Best to read the thread fully and increase your reading comprehension before commenting buddy. I'm saying cap public servants maximum pay at the PM's pay. He's the boss and does the most important job of all... others shouldn't get more as a principle alone. How is 393k peanuts.

He actually makes a good point. Look i understand you don't like the fact they get paid so much etc eetc vs private sector but the point is what everyone is saying is that the jobs worth what its worth no matter who the employer is, you pay peanuts you get monkeys. what your saying is they should not be paid so much ok... then they are doing the same job with the same stresses etc as the private sector for less money for what? Love of the city? lol come on! people dont work like that. lets say you drive trucks for a private company and then you get offered to work for the council but when you turn up the pay is alot less because you work for a public company? and you say to your boss whats the deal with the pay? he replies well IDW we assume that you are working for us because you love your job and you must understand we can't pay you as much coz itll look bad... and you go oh ok well thats fair....

Already read the thread, agree with toms comment, you should occupy something aside from NZBB to protest if you feel that strongly about it.

Also the PM isnt really the boss, and I would not go as far as to say his job was the most important or requires the greatest qualifications either.

This thread didn't start out separate by the way. One of the mod's pulled it from the Christchurch earthquake thread. So, just for the record, hhh1... I didn't go starting threads on this subject. I made a comment and people replied.

Well I suppose it's kinda true... and as has been stated in this thread private sector CEO's are paid significantly less than their public sector counterparts anyway. And fair enough... they're not pushing for profits like a CEO of a private sector company has to.

/thread for me. 8)

john key is only has the job because of popularity basically, more people voted for him than the others so he got the job... he has different people advising him on everything that happens he is just the spokesman for his party, the country and makes the final decisions... weather he personally actually has indepth knowledge on all the subjects he adresses the country on i dont know, but i highly doubt he knows everything.

his job isnt the most important, each person in a company/workplace does a job which compliments another persons job... its all really equally important in the big picture.

and i say f*ck the bad timing. so what he got a pay rise after the chch earthquake, big deal... why should he not get it because of something that is totally out of his control? i mean seriously should i not get my tax return next year because chch has has earthquakes... f*ck right off!

if any of the people bitching were in his position and were offered the rise i guarantee they would take it. good on the guy he has obviously worked hard and worked his way up, maybe hes kissed a few arses but if thats what it takes then so be it. too many people are too quick to just fire the critiscisms and the "i know bests" when they didnt really put much effort into their life and maybe didnt reach their occupation potential dude to lazyness and just going through the motions.

his payrise isnt shit compared to the billions itll cost to rebuild chch.. why would you wanna rebuild it anyway... its fucked, n that would just be a even bigger so called waste of money compared to this guys payrise lol
