What to do when your gym gear stinks?

>> forgot to take out and wash a couple of my gym tops and just found them hidden away in the depths of the gym bag. thought a rat had crawled inside and died with the smell. have washed them three times (& once with a nappy wash) and they still stink - anyone got any DIY de-odourising tips? been looking for a 'sports wash' in the supermarkets but to no avail. wouldn't care so much but these it had to be the old-faithful tops.. .

leave them overnight in somewashing powder? or use a fabric softener? some of them make your clothes smell nice (no homo)

put in some fabric stuff for the washes but leave over night you reckon? thought the nappy wash would do the trick - it does help - but they still have that stale / mouldy thing going on.. .

Sounds like they need a soak. Soak for 24 hours in a strong solution of nappisan. You could even add a dash of bleach (a very small amount won't fade your clothes but will waste the bacteria causing the smell)

You could try baking soda and white vinegar.. dunno if you would need to dilute the vinegar though.

Seems to work on cat pee.

White vinegar as well, its a natural antibacterial agent and should help to kill the smell.

On another note:

I use it in the Vax every time that I wash the carpets, to remove any smell. The vinegar is an acid and it penetrates the outer cell wall of bacteria that may cause smells and kills them.

**update**

thanks to everyone who posted. a cap full of bleach did the job! left the top soaking in a half filled sink for a couple of hours - then put it straight in the washing machine (on its own) and it came out smelling fine with no colour change. worn it to the gym since and no more smell = bingo!

I'm now a Registered nurse about to start my first nursing job Monday week. But I have been in the health care industry working as a caregiver for almost 8 years now. I have also sold a number of supplements in the past with a company that contains non-toxic ingredients and I learnt a shit load bout how to keep all that toxic crap out of my house. It does help that I just happen to be the bitch and my husband is the butch. Hope that helps.
