I eat them all the time. You can get 1kg bags of frozen cutlets for well under $20 if you shop around.

Also, if you're not having a dinner party and don;t give a f*ck what they look like, you can get 1kg bags of "prawn meat" (as opposed to cutlets) for even less. Gilmours, and sometimes Countdown and Farro, do them for $12.95 -$16.95 a kilo which isn't THAT bad for a kilo of lean meat. Sometimes even cheaper.

The difference between "cutlets" and "meat" is the "meat" is broken cutlets and broken pieces that just don;t look pretty. It also has the bonus of not having the tails attached.

Prawns are about 17-18g protein per 100g so I usually get 4 servings from a kilo bag (if I'm only eating the prawns as a protein source). I even cook them up at work (we have an oven here). Just defrost in water, chuck in a pan with some lemon juice, pepper and chili flakes. They cook so fast you don't even need any oil. I then dump that over rice and/or a salad. Done in 5 mins.

Another tip is if you go to the supermarket in the hour or two before closing time (8-10pm) they often boil up all the raw prawns they've had out in the display cabinet which won't last the night, and chuck them in plastic packs for real cheap.

I buy the pre-shelled ones, otherwise it ends up being a messy pain in the ass.

Once you've removed the heads and legs, you can eat the shells, but I usually don't.

You can throw them into a stirfry easy as. I add them to beef or chicken when I wok it up. They also add a great texture to the meal.
