Auckland University Recreation Centre Gym

Looking at moving gyms at the moment. Membership is due to expire and my weekly price will almost double! not keen!

Anyone got some feedback?

Equipment, space, atmosphere etc.?

I have herd it gets crazy busy sometimes but I will be looking at possibly training early morning so it may not be a problem

Would be the cheapest option for myself seeing as I am a student.

Will head over for a casual to try get a fell for it.

Much appreciated,

~D.

went there once at a peak time.. was real busy, some equipment kinda squeaky but seems like it would be real good for the price if you went at a not so busy time. also for students its only $6 a week or something like that so if its local for you then why not give it a casual visit 'test' at a typical time you would go.

it costs $257 per 12 months if you're a uoa student. just under $600 (i think) if youre a community member

equipment

pretty good, decent range of equipment, not complete but for $257 im not about to complain. equipment is in decent working order for the most part... some squeeky cables, know some guys who trained there recently who hated that, but they need to harden up imo. healthy number of dumbbells, few good squat racks, etc. good aircon

space

space is pretty good. plenty of room to move between machines, decent sized abs/stretching area separate from the weights area, decent number of treadmills (usually pretty full tho), decent circuit training area.

atmosphere

its fine really, may take some getting used to watching puny little guys strut around like they own the place, but i guess that comes with the territory - uni gym, so lots of young noobs. gets pretty damn busy after 5-6, used to die down around 8.30, but the seasonal trainers are in. it being busy hasnt had much impact on my training except with the bench press area and occasionally the squat racks. if you wanna avoid all this go in the morning

overall a pretty good gym, beats a number of gyms ive tried, especially considering how much im paying \:D/

edit: don't go in the evening... way too busy, no bars free these last couple of weeks

Pretty much what everyone else said, avoid busy times like between 5pm and 8pm.

Notable features:

3 squat racks

Deadlift platform

Assorted bars and speciality bars like trap bar, cambered bar, axle bars

chains and bands

2 hammerstrength leg presses

5 cable stations

dumbells upto 60kg

Seperate cardio and stretch rooms

Several bench presses including decline, incline, flat and adjustable.

Cheap and well equiped for the price, definitely worth it if you are a student.
