I often think about what I have seen guys do and what separates us. Every gym in the world you'll see guys bench 100k, 140k less frequently, 180k hardly ever and how many times have a I seen in person a bodybuilder bench 220? In 20 years of going to the gym and training with and around some real monsters.... Wouldn't even be 15 times and a few of those times it was me. Same with 300k squats.. Only ever seen in person a handful of bodybuilders do that and yep again I was one of them. That spurs me on the idea that I want to be doing shit other people can't do.

Same with every exercise. I mean size and shape and proportion are largely genetic... So I would always think that if I can't beat you onstage I will beat you in the gym. Comps are 15 minutes onstage a year, power is all day every day!! Right now my waning strength has brought me back to this mentality and the idea that I am settling for doing what other people do makes me angry at myself and spurs me to do the work to do what I should be doing. Competitive bugger I am.

Lol yeah bro I have done it a few times, most memorable for me was a triple when I only weighed 101 and was a week out from a comp. Close foot stance, high bar squats with belt and knee wraps. Second was doing a triple raw but less impressed by that cos I weighed 123k that day. Pretty sure we'll be seeing sets and reps with that weight from you before too long and for sure we'll see the elusive 8 plate squat too!!! Only seen 2 bodybuilders in person ever do that. I am waiting to see you do it cos I know you will!

i always think about what arnold says in pumping iron while casually sitting on that couch... no, not about da pump but rather:

Arnold Schwarzenegger

“The only way to be a champion is by going through these forced reps and the torture and pain. That’s why I call it the torture routine. Because it’s like forced torture. Torturing my body. What helps me is to think of this pain as pleasure. Pain make me grow. Growing is what I want. Therefore, for me pain is pleasure. And so when I am experiencing pain I’m in heaven. It’s great. People suggest this is masochistic. But they’re wrong. I like pain for a particular reason. I don’t like needle’s stuck in my arm. But I do like the pain that is necessary to be a champion.”

“A beginner does eight repetitions of a certain exercise with his maximum weight on the barbell. As soon as it hurts, he thinks about stopping. I work beyond this point, which means I tell my mind that as soon as it starts aching it is growing. Growing is something unusual for the body when you are over eighteen. The body isn’t used to ten, eleven, or twelve reps with a maximum weight. Then I do ten or fifteen sets of this in a row. No human body was ever prepared for this and suddenly it is making itself grow to handle this new challenge, growing through this pain area. Experiencing this pain in my muscles and aching and going on is my challenge. The last three or four reps is what makes the muscles grow. This area of pain divides a champion from someone who is not a champion. That’s what most people lack, having the guts to go on and just say they’ll go through the pain no matter what happens. I have no fear of fainting. I do squats until I fall over and pass out. So what? It’s not going to kill me. I wake up five minutes later and I’m OK. A lot of other athletes are afraid of this. So they don’t pass out. They don’t go on.”

Can you image this happening at Les Mills!

I know when i get to the point i think i have to stop, ill say in my head how its the pushing past the pain that stimulates the growth and i usually can painfully force out 2-3 more. If people are watching me this also makes me do 2-3 more. If theres a hottie next to me ill become a mad man blasting out up to 6 extras. Then casualy drop the weight on the floor , walk past the hottie smiling, into the next room and black out on the floor.
