Hi, I am new to this site, i am a lady but thought id post here as i really want some good nutrition advice :)

I am a gym gunkie!

Used to be very small, poss 7 kgs less then i am now. Was a bit unhealthy with training and eating. And gained 7 kgs over 2 years of unhealthy lifestyle.

right now i am about 67 kgs

Lost about 4 kgs early in the year.. burning muscle.. eating very little and extreme cardio and sauna, which took me down to 63kgs.

Now I am doing everything the healthy way, split weight training 4 days a week and 4 cardios a week too.

How ever i am finding i am gaining more fat around my mid section. My arms and legs are toned but not my problem area.. muffins!

I eat 6 small meals a day

generally only carbs i have is 1/c oats in the morn

every other meal is protien and vege ie tuna or chicken or something and roughly about 100 to 150g

i also eat almonds

and have a good protien powder i have in the morning and at night time too.

I limit myself to one off day a week. And eat what ever i want and dont train that day.

Could this be the problem? any ideas as to why i am getting larger around the middle.. ? getting a bit angry at putting in the effort and not getting the results.

Ok cheers :) Should i really be doing a "cheat day"? as people tell me there good for your metabolism

My goal is fat loss and to gain muscle... I have really toned legs and arms.. just around the middle and hips tend to store fat.

some say that a 'cheat day' or 'refeed day' boosts levels of leptin to help when your fat loss has stalled. give it a go and see how you respond.

Your goal is a tricky and elusive one but also of the most common!

Most people tend to hold most of there fat/water around those areas so your not alone there. if its really bothering you you just have to cut back your calorie intake and loose over all weight, spot reduction in ares like the stomach/hips are something i don't believe are possible (i have read some literature to support this but i'm not convinced)

i also eat almonds

How many? Calorie-dense little buggers, if it's a decent portion here, I'd cut back on them and see if that changes anything...

And what NZ_Guy said, maybe on the cheat days keep a watch on the total intake. Still have some "non-diet" foods, but don't make it a binge as such.

Hey legs,

You will get great nutrition advice here!

Just a thought though - it might pay to get your thyroid and cortisol levels checked next time you see your GP.

In particular, weight gain around the torso and face - among other things - can be a sign that your cortisol levels are too high - often caused by a benign tumor or medication that interferes with cortisol.

I doubt there is something wrong, but whenever weight change is involved, particularly if its rapid or inexplicable, it's worth making sure your hormones are in order.

Good luck

Having such low carbs and fat through the day will cause metabolism to slow right down, I suggest using small amounts of lo GI carbs throughout the day just oats in the morning is not enough. But 1 cup of oats at once is to much. I only have 2/3 cup oats in the morning and I'm 90kg being in absolute calorie deficit eg low/no carb turns your body into a fat storing machine. But if in a relative calorie deficit 400-500 cals under daily needs your body turns into a fat burning machine. Thats why people blow out post comp the body holds all fat and carbs because it's in starvation mode.

Depends on body type, but typically on endomorph that much carbs at one sitting will hinder fat loss add that with eating no carbs for rest I the day this is when you start holding these carbs as fat, as the body is in starvation mode. You have seen the condition I get I for shows and you don't get even close to shreaded having 1 cup oats i know by personal experience, for me 1/2 or 1/3 cup is sufficient as I have small amounts with each meal. Before a workout ok because you will utilize the energy but if you have only 1 cup of oats in the morning and none throughout the day your body will store the sugars from the carbs as its In starvation mode like I said early on in the post. I'm not being a smart ass I'm just speaking from experience with the countless bbng diets I have done and alot of research for my own info

my own experience has been that oats hindered my fat loss and I had to switch to sweet potatoes. Another thing that didn't help was whipped cream and full fat cheese (which I was consuming primarily for the protein)

so it was the full fat cheese and whipped cream in excess, to say oats hindered my fat loss and switched to sweet potatoes which remedied it just does not make sense at all... If you were guessing portion sizes of oats and kumara then I can see how you could think this by your oat servings bring more calories than the kumara servings you were eating. Calculate your carbs per serving and you wouldn't be saying that.

Actually it was the oats. The full fat cheese and whipped cream where introduced much later on in the diet. Portions of both the sweet potatoes and the oats were counted and measured.

imo thats incorrect... and im talking about the portions relative to the macros the sweet potatoe and oats contain.. maybe u were eating less carbs on the kumara resulting in less calories when u switched from oats to the sweet potatoe? so did you add the macros up when u measured the portions on the food scales?
