Wow, looking huge, Pete!

Thanks, I was a little flatter at pre-judging, I filled out for finals but smoothed over just a little too

Thought I'd right a quick summary of the show as the NZIFBB has copped a bit of flack over the last couple of years.

This year they changed the venue from the Uni in Karori to St. Pats Welly in Kilbernie. To be honest, I really did not like this venue, it was like any other college auditorium so seating from a spectator perspective was not as good. The hall also allowed in alot of natural light so the caliber of competitor from pre-judging did not seem so great. Even Yuram, who had crazy vascularity, appeared to have little to no separation under the lights, most people got washed out. Not good for guys relying on conditioning to carry them past bigger guys. At the night show though, with darkness settling in, everyone looked so much better.

Back stage also was not as good. Men and women had their own rooms to the left and right of the stage respectively, where they could get tanned. At the uni venue there is ample room to tan, hang out and relax with the other athletes where as at this venue we were almost restricted to our groupings of age categories, novices etc because of limited room. This lead to the open men getting to the stage late cause they didn't know when they could go back and get ready. This is their fault though, not the organisers. Athletes they didn't know but I had no issue with timing, they just need to sort their shit out.

Organisation of the show was the best I have seen, in my limited experience, was run to time and the music wasn't buggered up. I think the no late registration policy this year was a great decision and probably the reason for this.

The atmosphere was a bit flat for the bodybuilding portions of the show, seemed to only be alive when bikini and MPD were on. Some people I spoke with said the venue kinda made them feel a bit relaxed and quited which I tended to agree with but also those divs were the "eye candy" division which the general public could get behind a lot more.

I was highly disappointed with the amount of athletes entered in the Novice and Open Mens bodybuilding (5 Novice and 11 Open) but have a suspicion that alot of the MPD guys would usually have entered Novice.

Next show held in Wellington I hope will be at a different venue, I'm not sure as to the reasoning for the change but can only assume it was to compensate for the growing crowd numbers to the night show. I was impressed with the organisation of the show by Moe and his group of back stage people and I think they made a positive step in reinvigorating the NZIFBB.

Remember pls that these are merely my opinions of how I viewed everything and what I gathered from other people I spoke to.

"Bodybuilding is a subjective "sport", there will always be decisions people disagree with"

I agree with you pete ... but after reading various facebook pages....you have already commented yourself that there were others more deserving of high placings/wins, than those that actually received them!

Organisation might have been better this time round, so ups to Moe for that! But some of the judging was a bit under par!

Bodybuilding is subjective, but this show was more than that. Not sure I understand the whole Moe did a great job opinion, the NZIFBB didn't even know the night before where the venue was going to be, then there was the light coming in the windows during pre-judging washing out competitors condition, plus the lights being at the wrong venue, having to be rushed to the right St pats. Then had to be re-adjusted for the night show.

The venue had flat seating for supporters, extremely small tanning/pump up areas. My experience was the whole getting ready to be on stage was not my fault as you say, but the size of the venue. There was 1 small bedroom sized mirror for all the men to share to check tan, but finding space to even use it was difficult.

Would also be interested in seeing the score cards on the open mens classes. Do the judges use score cards at regional shows or just pass notes and glances?

As someone who ran 14 events for the old NZFBB (i.e. pre-NZIFBB) from 2005 to 2010 (most here in Wellington), I took particular interest in the pre-judging yesterday. I don't like to dwell on negatives, so all I will say is there was a fantastic line-up of competitors!

If anyone wants a guaranteed fun, professional and rewarding show, then I invite you all (competitors and spectators) to come to the first ever NABBA/WFF NZ Wellington Bodybuilding Champs at Memorial Theatre, Victoria University this Saturday (Sept 15). The show starts at midday and everything (routines, compulsories, prize-giving and overalls) is done in one session - split by a 30 minute interval. I've got my very experienced team of staff and an amazing panel of 9 incredibly experience judges (incl two test judges) to ensure every competitor gets exactly the place they deserve! For more details, send me an email (terry.hills@xtra.co.nz) or call me (0274 303654).

The lighting was pretty shit in terms of washing guys out, but its really up to the guys to get dark enough to deal with that. Joe managed that but everyone else need to go a few shades darker for sure! Pays to get in the venue early and find these things out I guess.

Show went well from a viewers POV, the usual mix ups of music still tho?

Great effort by all competitors involved, highlights for me were seeing guys coming in to qualify for Nats big and full - Harry reminded me of BJ Johns & had rediculous mass through delts/chest/arms, Supry was up in mass as was Joe. The Dolan boys came in hard, but Joram (spelling?) was absolutely diced to bits - truly freakish!!!

I only had one issue with the whole event, which I made very fucking clear at the time (if you were there you would've heard me! :pfft:  ) so I'll leave it at that.

Nationals on!

Oh come on, don't do that to us, Nate! That's cruel! Tell us the juicy details... what happened, and more importantly, what did you do?!

O.K.

In the U90(?) this guy Yorum (hope I spelt it right?) was fucken shredded, and a few of the more experienced competitors said he'd win the show outright (though Jo was eventually a worthy winner despite not being as tight as he has been). He placed second in his class to a guy Tim, who looked okay, kinda like Harry, Supry etc in that it looked like he was just there to qualify for Nationals rather than bring show winning condition. He was smooth enough to compete in the board shorts division as well if thats any indication?

Now I didn't know anyone in the class, so I have zero allegiance here, but was told Darren O trained Tim (I think Darren & Moe were the only ones at Judging table at the time - cos I looked to see who was to blame for the worst decision I have ever seen!!). Understandably Yorum was stunned and stormed off the satge and home, and one of the guys due to come out for the overall refused to saying Yorum had beat them fair and square.

Now usually there is room for some subjectivity, but this was like me in the offseason beating Tom Woljik! It was that obvious even to noobies in the crowd.

Anyway that was my issue, no point labouring it but I guess as an athlete all you want is to be judged on your merits, not some political issue? I felt really sorry for the guy and spoke to his missus, she said there had been some beef with Moe at some point but thought it was ancient history. I said compete in NABBA-WFF next weekend and see if thats better for him.
