Rule of thumb i live by:

"if hes bigger than me, listen to every word he says and remember that shit!!!, if hes smaller smile, nod and disregard"

You do realize not everyone has the same goals in life. Just because you may be bigger than someone that doesn't mean for a moment they don't know what they are talking about.

If you really live by that you will miss out on a wealth of knowledge.

There are research geeks that know some very useful stuff when it comes to training. There are also guys who have done the hard yards and have results from experience.

I like a combination of the two - someone with theoretical knowledge and hands on experience. My ideal PT is the geek in the white labcoat with 20" guns tearing through the sleeves!

apologies for my comment don't think it really encapsulated what i was trying to say. When I look for information on how to better my training, diet etc, In my opinion its best to listen to someone who was already gone through what i currently am. I didn't mean to say that if your inexperienced your full of shit but maybe its best to listen to someone who has gone through some of the roadblocks and problems to achieve mutual goals. if your goal is reach a particular weight in bench, you would ask someone who has been down that road and not some who is focused on getting lean, although he may have valid points.

I remember when I was assigned a PT whom i informed of my intentions to gain muscle. he had a super lean frame and was distance runner. I believe during our consult he told me to focus on using using small weights for 20+ reps and focus my diet on proteins and nearly erase all carbs. He told me this would get me to where i wanted to be. 3 months later.....nothing. I was fortunate to get talking a large member of the gym who had the physique i was going for and he laughed at my program and quickly set me straight with compound movements at 8-12 reps and finally seen some results i wanted. so I hope that clears up my view on a persons physique and the co-relation to their credibility.

disagree if you want.

No offence but thats a ignorant approach mate.

I think it's a fair "rule of thumb" as a discriminatory. Your average big guy is going to give better advice than your average little guy.

You still miss the point, my uncle is a small guy now but he used to be massive and was a top body builder in NZ(looking at him now you would have no idea) Their are plenty of people out their like this. PT's that have worked with and helped out plenty of guys achieve their goals of being massive. Not everyone who is small is inexperienced. Some of the best coaches in the world are nothing when compared next to the athletes they train, but know a shitload more than anyone else in how to achieve the goals someone wants.

I understand what you are saying about taking advice from big guys, but don't instantly dismiss advice from someone smaller.

experience+knowledge>knowledge

I would've said this sounded pretty good as a summary............

NEK MINUTE!!

Just going to play the devil's advocate here. Doug Blevins is one of the best kicking coaches in the NFL. He also has Cerebral Paulsy, and has never kicked a football in his life

Umm this threw me for a bit, but then I thought the above by terry still applies if the experience is Coaching Experience, not just limited to Hands On Experience.

That said Doug must be an exception to the norm - good point to contemplate tho Phedder!

You will find some of the best coaches in the world at whatever sport a lot of them never played to a high level or at all. Look at Oly lifter trainers, track and field trainers, not all of them ever competed.

Prime example here in NZ, Graham Henry never played, has only coached and has one of the best coaching records in rugby.
