Is bodybuilding a sport?

As we have more regular posters who now compete it will make it more interesting for some other peoples perspectives.

So IYO is bodybuilding a sport?

why wouldnt it be a sport? like any other sport you train and prepare for a certain event and then perform on the chosen day. just because you dont do a show every saturday at 2.45 doesnt mean its not a sport. if that was the case triathlons etc wouldnt also not be a sport

I think a lot of people say no because the winner decided by opinion. Not because they were necessarily the best. I mean, I think it's a sport, but some people though Kai should have won Olympia and Wolf should have placed top 3 blah blah. :shrug:

It's not a sport in my opinon. But it all depends on what someone's definition of a sport is. To me, it's too subjective... there are no clear rules for choosing the winner, it's all up to personal preference of the judges and what the trend is in bodybuilding at the time. Think of a smaller guy up on stage with perfect symmetry and muscle shape... he'd loose out over a larger mass monster that has less symmetry and muscle shape.

Totally agree.

It's not a sport, it's a lifestyle. Shows are places where recognition, respect and admiration is given, but I don't think you can classify competing in looks as a sporting competition.

One way to think of it is imagine a rookie bodybuilding comp where someone shows up with an incredible physique who has never set foot in a gym or trained for it. Imagine that this person won. How is that sport? It is a competition of looks/beauty.
