Quality VS Quantity of Whey protein

I have been buying my Whey protein concentrate in 22LB bucket with 390 serves for $280.00 ,its around 76% protein at 20 grams of protein per serve, yet costs around 70c a shake when buying in bulk. I recently went too another shop in Auckland too have a browse and got chatting about the importance of quality when it comes too protein powder. When I asked the salesman if he had anything different I could try around the same value he told me i should be buying something of better quality like ON gold standard whey, it's gonna cost me more but I will get better gains. Aparently he used too use the Fonterra protein because of price, but he didnt see the gains he was hoping for until he changed too ON(or a similar product) and his gains improved.

Now my question is that if I went for a better quality whey protein would i see better gains even if I was taking the same Gram for gram amount of protein in daily?

My guess is no, he was just trying too up sell me too something more expensive.

Does quality really matter gram for gram with whey protein?

I always thought as long as it mixes well, tastes good and is low in carbs and sugars your on too a winner,or am i totally wrong?

Lol, of course he would say that. Some of the shit the supp salesman spin is as bad as the supp companies. Sure you might be able to find a slightly better quality protein but are you going to notice a difference in real world gains? I think not.

so long as it's a 'complete protein' ie contains all 9 essential amino acids in decent proportions then i think it will be fine. Most animal proteins such as whey protein , meat and caesin are complete.

If you stopped taking your whey protein altogether i dont think you'd notice any difference provided your protein intake from other foods was sufficient

Thanks for the feedback, the protein I currently take is Bioplex and it does have a reasonably high BCAA concentration which is great, and I wish I could just have whole foods too get my protein intake but its so bloody hard  thats why I have around 3-4 shakes a day too get my recommended intake, but like u say hes a salesman and they always try too up sell you, It's like what MuscleTech say about some of their products with the outlandish statements like" users gained 74% more muscle on our nitrotech than other whey protein supplements, what a load of bullocks! :^o

For me it's about bang for the buck. It's easy to buy a high quality whey isolate that's 90%+ protein but it's likely to be substantially more expensive than an 80% whey concentrate.

For example the 20kg WPI bags from Fonterra are something like twice the price of the 20kg WPC bags (when last I checked). So for twice the money, I'm getting 100 grams more protein per kilo - and less carbs and fat of course. Is that worth twice the money? Not to me, I'd rather take slightly more WPC if I have to and spend the additional money on other supplements or plain old food.

There's nothing wrong with the overall quality of a good WPC or blend IMHO. If you're not making gains on a decent protein source (i.e. a decent mix of real food and supplements), then switching to the best protein in the world probably won't make all that much of a difference.

+1

Isn't it also true that if you take your protein at the same time as other food (especially other types of protein), say for example if you mix it with milk then the difference between the types (like WPI and WPC) are even less pronounced?

WPI vs WPC

Im yet to met anybody who can consume 500g+ daily of WPC without stomach problems.

The total opposite goes for Highest Quality WPI, I consume 500-800g per day for years now and Im totally lactose intolerant.

Ive gotten a few people onto WPI only and none of them have stomach problems.

500g WPI per day costs me $17 a day for 400g + protein, Plus 5 Ltres Pure Juice is $6 per day, + 15ml EVOO is like $1

So

400g+ Protein

500g Carbs

150g Fat

(+150ml Gyycerin a day, optional and calories arnt counted. $8 for 800ml)

= close to 5000calories a day for $25 a day, around $150 a week. Then just eat when you really feel like it, for enjoyment etc, and use the shakes for the Macro make up that you need to grow.

I used to spend 3 times that on food a week before buying WPI in bulk.

I reckon proteins a bit over rated . Important but not in the quantities we are led to believe we need daily. Carbs on the other hand to me are very important.

Agreed. The protein myth is just a big fallacy that's been perpetuated by supplement companies.

500g protein a day is ludicrous- I pity the fools who kid themselves and their wallets into such madness.

Bluto, have you tried taking digestive enzymes? You can get them with lactase - the enzyme which breaks down lactose. That seems to solve stomach problems in a lot of people. I'd be curious to know if that works for you.

They add that lactase to the No Lactose milk. It still has lactose, but is boosted with that enzyme us intolerant folk are missing.

I couldn't drink half a glass of milk before, now I can guzzle it. oh yeah...

Shame I have only seen it in 1 liter bottles.

As for protein, tuna and eggs are gold (imo). But with some proteins getting to a buck a shake (as discussed in the Venom thread), it is cheaper than tuna for 20g of protein a serve. I haven't had protein powders for a while now.

But like said, if you are eating very well, you will get what you need.
