IFBB Pro banned from Rotorua gym!

From big Darren Onekawa's FB page:

It appears prejudice is still alive and well in the gym scene in Rotorua. Last night I trained at a local gym, Profiles on Ti Street. All went fine, it was a decent workout. Out of the 12 people there, 6 of them were guys I knew, 4 of whom I knew really well. So today I get a message from a person telling me I was not allowed to train there again! I rang the owner asking what the issue was. The owner, Greg Knight, your typical gym owner who doesn't even appear to train himself, wears the awkwardly tight shorts with army boots WTF, and even though he can't even fill out a medium size shirt properly still manages to wear a shirt that is too small for him, informed me my refusal of entry was not due to a complaint, but did not want to give me a reason for his decision. I've only had the one converstion with this guy Greg in the past and he seemed like an absolute douch bag way back then....news flash he's still a douch bag, but hey no ones perfect right?! Anyway, although I shouldnt really be investing too much thought into the matter, I just wanted to share my experience so if you're ever Rotorua and want to train don't go to Profiles on Ti Street

Wee bit reminiscent of Justin Rys getting banned from Les Mills in Wellington, btw on FB I also see Justin is out & about again. Be good to see if he gets on stage again - NABBA-WFF maybe?

that sucks a similar thing happened at the old BTS gym in mt eden that Frank Bolgaris used to run he sold up and the new owners came in and told some of the old members that where abit big or jaked looking that they where not part of the "new direction" the gym was looking to take and that they intimidated potential new clients

From I make of it reminds of when Justin Rhys got kicked out of Les Mills Wellington which I thought that was a bit PC.I owned a gym that would fine with me having a IFBB pro training at gym.I am also wondering what all the fusse is about.

Symptomatic of many of todays gym's unfortunately in that many people associate training hard/intensely negatively, unfortunately those who get intimadated are the ones that usually look the same year after year.

Ironically at LM Extreme, Darryn is well liked by staff and members as he is curtious, friendly and down to earth with people and he and Philly inspire others to train hard and improve through their actions.

Seems the big guy was judged by his size and of those he was training with (probably Dan Amos and Tim W/other local competitors), which is a shame cause he is a really great, humble guy.

The gym scene in Rotorua doesnt appear to have changed much, which is why D ended up training from his Elite Store for several years, infact he won the Mr NZ and his Pro Card training from his retail Store, which is phenominal considering most of the competition were training at commercial gyms and he was improvising with mostly retail and heavy home use equipment! Just goes to show you how motivated he is!

There are plenty of idiots who unnecassarily scream and grunt through workouts but Big D isnt one of them and this probably reinforces the benefit of his descision to move to Welly. He's just a hard trainer who lives and breathes BBuilding and a top bloke who always has time for the (many) people who want a piece of him.

 stink especially for no reason.

small mans syndrome

for sure!

If it was due to poor behaviour, that would've been an easy answer to his banning. No answer = no real reason.

small man with a big alpha complex. Just assuming.

Two sides to every story and none of you know the gym owners side so you can't really say much apart from be bias and support Darren because he's a big guy you idolize.

Who really gives a shit I mean train at another gym, this guy owns the gym so what he says goes it's probably his livelihood and he's gotta look out for his best interests

Maybe Darren needs to buy his own gym.

I'd be stoked if that happened to me.... \:D/ "Ive made it, I'm TOO BIG!!!"

LOL this.

bahahaha! me too lol.

... I think you may all completely off the mark - perhaps he doesnt like maori and pacific islanders. Would be interesting if Darryn made a formal complaint.

I have never met Darryn myself but have only ever heard good things about him.

Thats typical of most gyms ive been too.

Been kicked out of Lifestyles for complaining about bent bars and grunting. They told me to use less weight if bars were bending so much that plates all slid off ene with collars.

Kicked out of uptown for doing deadlifts

Kicked out of Local gym in pram for grunting

If you survey gym newbies.

I believe they prefer to workout at a normal size gym. Not with some massive 6 foot 2, 110+ kg bodybuilder.

I guess there were peer pressure from other customers to kick IFBB pro out of the gym. They don't like feeling small at the gym.

I go to this gym but i wasnt there on the day Darren was there, i certainly heard about it though. Sounded like he was doing a normal workout but treated the equipment with a bit of disregard that the owner might not of liked.

Put yourself in the owner's shoes, if someones throwing the weights around, would you continue to let it happen? Just sayin'
