Gyms in Wellington city?

ssw

Recommended Posts

Hey,

Will be in Wellington for 2 weeks for work.

Looking for a gym to frequent while I'm there.

I'm staying in the city so preferably a gym within walking distance of 'the terrace'.

Just looking for free weights and a treadmill. Cheaper the casual rate the better.

:)

Depends what kind of gym you're after, really...

Within walking distance of The Terrace, there is Les Mills on the Terrace... imagine casual fees would be up there, though.

Thorndon Cityfitness isn't too far, maybe 10mins walk (depending on which part of The Terrace you're on). This used to be my main gym, free weights are ok there (last I checked).

There is also a Cityfitness just off Willis St which is probably the same distance from The Terrace, just in the other direction. Again, I don't think the casual rates would be too flash ($15 last time I checked I think?). Have never been here so can't comment on the setup, imagine it would be more cardio-focused.

There is one on Willis St called Habit, located in the Majestic Centre. If you're up the top end of The Terrace this will be a handy location.

There is also one on Lambton which is pretty close to The Terrace, located in the Whitcoulls building (the name of it escapes me...).

Failing that, if you're up for a bit more of a journey, the Powerhouse is probably 20-30mins brisk walk from there (again, depends which part of The Terrace). Definitely caters to strength if that's what you're after, free weights-a-plenty, and lots of stuff to do cardio on (incl treadmill if you're that way inclined). And we've got the Bledisbro Cup on this Saturday, with the inaugral Classic (raw) Powerlifting Nationals on this Sunday.

Probably 5-10mins closer than the House, is Les Mills Extreme. Busy gym, good variety of gear, fees will probably be up there again. Free weights are good here, obviously treadmills in plentiful supply.

Same sort of area to the House and LM Extreme is Exodus, pretty modern setup here and can probably score a free visit if you ask. Freeweights are ok, lots of cardio gear.

That's all I can think of! Wellington is a small city, so everything in the CBD is pretty much within a fair walking distance of everything else. Again, depends exactly what kind of gym you're after really... :)

The one in the top of the Whitcoulls building used to be called Sync - but it seems to have been taken over by Lifestyle.... never used it, but the website mentions free trials.

There's also Bodies under Construction, but again that's all I know about it.

Les Mills and Exodus both want $25 for a day pass - but at Exodus I think that gets you a free towel... it's reasonably well set up, with a good range of free weights, couple of cages and squat racks. You might be able to talk someone at Exodus into a free pass, think Les Miserables aren't so generous.

i used to go to the vic uni gym and whenever it was closed would abuse other gyms free trials. tried this one and honestly it was pretty poor, think it was still being built at the time though. seems like its mostly for people working out recreationally in their lunch times, 100 treadmills and one bench press that felt really weird. no rack etc. massive gaps in the free weights available (went like 10, 15, 20kg 30kg or something) wouldnt really recommend it

on the subject, does anyone know of any 24/7 gyms? i think theres a jetts opening soon on cuba but ive never been to one so don't really know what its like
