just to clarify the sub junior records... if a guy competes next year and he is 17 now, turning 18 in november 2012 - does this qualify him to lift as a sub-junior for the whole of 2012?

Yep! That's right. I turned 18 in August this year and I just competed in the North Island Champs as a Sub Junior. My lifts were over the Standard for the NZ Squat and Deadlift records but unfortunately I had only been registered for 3 months. So gutted as this is my last year as a SJ then the Junior record jumps up about 60kgs!

You have to be registered with NZPF for 6 months before you can break records so make sure you register at least 6 months before the competition.

cool, thanks :)

but what are knee sleeves?

Knee sleeves are slip on covers, usually made of neoprene, can be a maximum thickness of 7mm (I believe?). Rehband is a popular one, and IPF approved. I have a pair myself (so do a lot of people at The Powerhouse). Here's an example:

hey, thanks for reminding me about that registering 6 months prior to setting records - i'd forgotten about that completely (been away for far too long!)

i better get onto getting these registrations in so that hopefully 2012 will be a year of going for records :)

In terms of benefit to your lift? No, not as much as a knee wrap unfortunately :( At a very optimistic guess, I'd be lucky to get 5kg out of mine, but easily get 20+ out of a nice tight wrap. They keep your knees nice and warm though!

The Blue Rehbands are only sold through Jackals Gym. General opinion is they are one of the better sleeves on the market, but I've only tried these so I have no (personal) basis for comparison to give, sorry. You can land them here for roughly $120 a pair (depends on dollar strength). These are 7mm thick.

Failing that, another option could be to check with the NZ Titan Distributor (Reuben Simanu) whether he can get the Titan Sleeves in, or if he stocks them. They're also 7mm thick, although I haven't heard of anyone who has used them...

And hey, a few guys have been doing them on the cheap, using old wetsuits (made of neoprene). Not sure if they'd be comp legal? But if you can get some material, it may give you a feel for what they're like before laying cash down on them :)

I think Steve Lousich was wearing a pair Titan's at the the Classic

They are legal long as they do not go past the length specifications, and as D said a cheaper version by far.

4. Wraps not exceeding 2 m in length and 8 cm in width may be used. A knee wrap shall not extend beyond 15 cm above and 15 cm below the centre of the knee joint and shall not exceed a total covering width of 30 cm.

Alternatively, an elasticised knee cap supporter not exceeding 30 cm in length may be worn. Knee sleeves 30 cm in length a re also legal and the medical/surgical sleeves is also an option. A combination of the two is strictly forbidden.

Neoprene may be “synthetic” rubber but is only acceptable in the knee sleeve.

I have attached a copy of the Raw Classic Rules.
