RUNNING AND CARDIO

Recommended Posts

i know a lot of guys are against running for cardio but not sure why? whats is the difference between running and walking on incline etc? is it just the heart rate factor or is there more to it? eg loss of size in legs etcccccccccc

Mostly it's about lose of muscle in the legs coupled with stealing away recovery time from your workouts. For the bigger guys it's about that and their joints not being able to handle the pounding with their increased bw etc etc etc

ok so you do lose size as opposed to walking on a tredmil even is heart rate stays the same?

I think it's an individual thing, I mean I know Jo Stewart runs and at an awesome pace leading up to comps and she has awesome legs.. But if you struggle with leg size like a lot of guys do then maybe don't run. Look man if you enjoy it do and just make up for it with extra cals and making sure to be aware of recovery etc etc etc I think it's silly to just avoid doing something because that's what bodybuilders do.. rather have a go and see if you can fit things in and if you enjoy them and they aren't counter productive then why not?

As Harry said I think it comes down to what you can do without affecting recovery.

Think of it as a continuum. Up to 45 mins it'll possibly help recovery with increased blood flow, improve your fitness etc. Past 45 minutes it'll start slowing your recovery and possibly start burning muscle etc.

Arbitrary numbers and they'll differ for everyone, but the point is that a certain amount of running should be beneficial, go past that amount and there becomes less benefits and more negatives. Jogging for 2 hours probably isn't going to suit your goals, but I doubt 30 minutes is going cause your legs to shrink and recovery to suffer.

i agree. i just got a sudden urge idk why maybe cause its such a nice day. i did morning job/walks when gettin ready for my comp and lost a bit of size especially in my legs...not sure if this is just down to cutting in general (maybe i hold a lot of fat in my quads) or from runnin. who knows..will prob just walk itll be more efficient for muscle retention

So is 25km a week bad?

Starting to feel pretty bad about it now. :(

That entirely depends on what you're trying to achieve, and what other training you're doing to achieve it?

Trying to find that balance between fit and strong really. Will probably get back into swimming now warmer weather is coming. I'm pretty keen on running and Interval running as well. Keeps me chasing the rucks. :)

Well there ya go, fits your goals well. If it's not getting in the way of your strength training, then don't worry about it.
