Vegan Bodybuilding

Hi Guys,

I'm new to this site. Basically I'm looking for some information from anyone who is getting good results with regards to putting on lean muscle mass & is a vegan or vegetarian.

I've been reading online on veganbodybuilding.com - & was wanting to know if there is anyone in NZ on the same path as me and if I could get some tips around potential pitfalls to avoid on a vege diet or things that have worked well for anyone else.

Also experimenting with having plenty of greens/raw foods and keeping towards alkaline foods where possible. I think that will do as a criteria for now

Cheers,

Amit

Potential pitfall = Lack of meat :pfft:

But seriously, vegetarian wouldn't be too hard (fish?, eggs, milk, shakes etc.) Vegan I'd imagine would be extremely difficult, it just doesnt fit with gaining muscle. Good luck

depends bro...some vegans are hardcore that don't eat fish/eggs/milk ...pretty much their protein is rice or pea protein...I recall there were quite a few successful stories of people who were vegan on bb.com...

There will always be exceptions to the rule.. Some people who dont train or give a f*ck about what they eat have good physiques too, but 99% of people are gonna be a fucklaod better off with quality protein sources. Mankind is SUPPOSED to eat meat.

Pretty sure Amit doesn't need to hear from every single meat-lover on the forum.

Amit, a friend of mine tried a diet that sounds very similar to what you're suggesting. He wasn't happy. As well as being vegan and alkaline, it was also very low calorie. He lost a lot of weight, most of it muscle, and his bodyfat increased sharply.

I'm not trying to dissuade you necessarily, but the only feedback I've heard about this type of diet is not at all positive.

Awesome guys thanks. I am a former Chicken lover, esp Nandos! Yeah I did find i was losing hard earned muscle mass, but am starting to fine tune things. Appreciate the feedback and links. Cheers guys.

Would be good to put a diet up so others in your situation can see what you're doing. Seems a damn hard road to follow trying to get mass without meat, eggs, dairy. Best of luck.

there is a chance also as a vegan that you could be deficient in certain minerals and Vitamin's so make sure you take some calci and vitamin tabs.

B12 & Iron often common deficiencies from my limited understanding?

according to that fellow named google, B12 and iron is the biggest culprit, but again I guess vegan bodybuilding or even vegetarian bodybuilding is uncharted territory for the majority of us.

fire and meat it's what makes us sit at the top of the food chain ,don't understand vegans. If we listened to them we'd have cows telling us what to do.

f*ck that! Stoopid cow Bitch get in mah burger!!

Hey Buddy,

I'm Indian/Kiwi if you haven't gathered by my name ;-)

(Have to specify now days thanks to Paul Henry ;-)

My family has always been vegetarian, then started eating meat in my early twenties to get my weight up. Was sitting at about 55kgs with little muscle.

Started training, eating chicken and fish. Studied BB nutrition and supplemented well. Fast forward a few years and am now 75kgs.

Happy with my weight. Still would like to head towards 85ish with lowish bodyfat and maintain a healthy lifestyle. I enjoy training and eating well.

As keeping fit and healthy is a hobby of mine, I'm always reading.

Have learnt a heap about how food effects the body at a cellular level.

I decided to experiment with what I was learning to see how things effected my body. Watched countless docos (The Beautiful Truth http://www.youtube.com/movie?v=wvzDHGLEUyw&ob=av4e&feature=mv_sr Food Matters, etc etc) and research studies but decided to go with what made logical sense to me.

Since I've cut out meat, and started taking in more raw foods, my energy levels and metal clarity are at insane levels. That is what I love about my choice. Also it's cheaper, that appeals to my Indian side.

I'm finding I am needing less and less protein, I'm eating less, getting stronger and the body-fat is dropping slowly (However earlier my muscle mass dropped radically and bodyfat ballooned) It's a bit of a balancing act getting it right. Why bother? It makes sense to me and to be honest some of the things I am trying are not the norm, I'm sure if I put them up in a forum I would get more frowns than smiles ...... Also I'm not 100% sure which is why I posted the original question.

However, I'm really starting to fine tune things and it's taken a good 18 months of trying different foods, training and I'm finally starting to get results. I was just wanting to pick on someones brain, as I've run into a couple of guys at the gym lately who are on the same path.

Also the forum is a great place to get some opinions \:D/

I started vegan this week. But i still eat fish (tuna). It will be hard considering i was born a carnivore :pfft:

Wonders will never cease... a Sth African giant vegan! I have seen it all!!

On a side note, Bill Pearl was vegetarian and built an amazing physique and had incredible power, well before decent supplements.

I was vegetarian for many years then turned vegan for 4 years, this was before I started lifting.

Being vegan was a hard slog, protein wise it's really hard to get as much in as a meat eater but not impossible. There has been a few people pop up on this board asking about vegan Body Building and I always wonder what happened to them.

Maybe do a search at the top, you won't be the only one in NZ.

There are a few vegan body building sites like this http://www.veganbodybuilding.com/forum/ you may have already looked into.

It would be interesting to see an example of your diet and training.

Good luck Amitnz!
