Yeah, I think abs (like every other muscle) are largely determined by your genetics. Just as some people have massive calves without doing anything, other poor sods can thrash hell out of them and they still only have skinny twigs. It's exactly the same with abs - some people will find that heavy squats etc will be enough, and others will need to target their midsection specifically. There's no one rule that applies for everyone.

Personally, I'm somewhere in between. For best results, my abs need direct training, but I can also get away with ignoring them for a bit.

When I do them, I prefer weighted cable crunches, and dragon flags.
