Muscle-building properties of mustard

The Daily Mail reports the findings of a study at North Carolina University and published in FASEB Journal. Homobrassinolide, a steroid found in the mustard plant, can increase muscle mass, the size of muscle fibres and appetite. The researchers claim that homobrassinolide may have potential as a functional ingredient for individuals needing to build muscle.

I get these through email at work, just posting as may be interesting to some.

Note – this dosing protocol equates to a dosage of between 1363 and 4090 mg per day for a 150 lb man.

Conclusion

Don’t get excited when a supplement company comes out with a new homobrassinolide supplement next month.

Even if homobrassinolide pans out as a treatment for muscle wasting and an awesome new supplement for 16 year old boys sick of getting sand kicked in their face….it’s going to be years and years before an effective product comes to market.

Ineffective over-hyped products will be on the market in 2-3 months.

^^ Thanks for that, a simple, concise take on the matter.

I managed to track down the original study, but I think a masters in bio-chemistry is required to understand most of it, a few 100-level papers just don't cut it :pfft: When I read the dosages were 20 or 60mg/kg/d I realised eating mustard seeds probably wouldn't cut it :) Couldn't actually find anything on how much homobrassinolide is in mustard seeds though.

This part could be quite promising though;

Additionally, researchers used surgically castrated peri-pubertal rat models to examine the ability of homobrassinolide to restore androgen-dependent tissues after androgen deprivation following castration. Results showed increased grip strength and an increase in the number and size of muscle fibers crucial for increased physical performance.

Androgen deprivation therapy is one of the most successful and widely used methods of combating prostate cancer, and patients quality of life is greatly reduced after treatment. If they could possibly restore androgen levels with minimal side effects/tumor re-growth it could improve the lives of so many. Only future R&D will tell, but I'm hopeful :nod:
