Are there many Crossfit people in the house?

If you like some whoop whoop with your training then cross fit is for you.

I saw it advertised locally down in Albany about 18 months back and did a free intro class. It was much like what ive seen of a pump class I guess. Its group fitness so theres motivational factors there if you need them. From memeory it wasnt cheap though... quite the oppisite. As you say pseudo, I would tend to agree that its an advertorial piece designed to hook in a few pre xmas holiday boomers!

Andy.

I'm fully in to crossfit now after doing standard weights for 4 years. I thought I was fit until I tried crossfit. It's insanely intense & incorporates all sorts of disciplines. Don't knock it until you've tried it, i guarantee it will kick your arse!

This morning the NZ Herald has an article on Crossfit training. It's a pretty glowing review, and the cynic in me wonders whether it's more advertorial than article.

Anyway, it made me wonder... do we have many Crossfitters here? How do you find a crossfit workout compares with "traditional" gym training?

You mean, "do we have any OTHER crossfitters here, apart from our resident Crossfit legend Nessie... "

I've tried it and it's a complete about-face... brutal, demanding, but not about three sets of 10-12 for the BB'ers (or even three sets of 2 for the PL'ers ).

When you take a look at some of the exercises, at the prescribed weight for men, it's easy to see how it can get folks ripped and fit.

So what if it's franchised - isn't that how Les Mills made their money, with Body-this and Body-that cardio classes?

And Les Mills is doing it again, but they aren't using olympic bar and what not, just kettlebells/medicine balls and more circuit based. Good for something different

Yeah some gyms are taking out all the heavy stuff to suit people that just wanna do circuit stuff, and call it crossfit even though it is not, hence the bad name. The real cross fit do a mix of cardio stuff, heavy weights, olympic lifting, gymnastics, etc... The RX (official) weight for men is not light and can take some time for people to even get to lifting that sort of weight at high intensity.

Haven't tried crossfit yet but have researched it a bit and started following it more closely.

Rich Froning is currently the 2011 crossfit games world champion aka 'fittest man on earth'.

It's easy to think crossfit is just full of skinny guys jumping around doing a whole lot of exercises. Serious crossfitters are pretty amazing physical specimens who carry alot more muscle than the average fitness buff.

I went from the bodybuilding way of life, to the Crossfit, and have enjoyed it.

As Tony said, it has all the elements to challenge you.

You won't grow like the weight training, but you lean out and gain the explosive edge and endurance.

I am 12kgs lighter than the gym muscle I was a year ago :( (but the trade off was holistic health).

It all comes down to your goals. I used to think it for soft cocks and spandex wanks, but I have done it, and am doing it still. I enjoy the challenge against time. It has improved my lung health better than anything else.

I feel younger. Fitter. Faster. and my abs are shinning through...

So, every big boy knocks it, but give it a go for even 2 months, before you claim it is bunk. I was a doubter, but now I will never look back.

I still enjoy lifting weights, but I have found a balance.

Do you just do the WOD as posted? Crossfit football seems like a betterway to go about things, Lot more focus on heavy lifting plus the conditioning at the end.

WOD for sure, but I am not an everyday is crossfit day, guy. So I mix it up.

I enjoy the heavy lifting too. I would have the bumper olympic set up at home if I could afford it.

I am coming back from poor kidney health so am looking forward to hitting the WODs hard before summer.

Yeah, I only do Crossfit 3 times a week, the other 2 days are heavy lifting, max squats, max deadlifts, etc... then a run on Saturday. Just cos you do Crossfit doesn't mean you have to give up the other stuff. Doing a mix, I have had better results than just straight weights. I struggled to get rid of the last bit of fat, but Crossfit has just shredded it in less than 4 months.

We had some body builders try Crossfit the other day, they were all big & buff, but they got their arses kicked in Crossfit. I think they had a new respect.

I think if you enjoy/need people to workout with you, and your fitness goals mean that a good workout involves savaging yourself into the ground, yeah Crossfit probably does well. But as an 'athletic' training tool, I'd have serious reservations about how well it would suit most peoples needs for any sport. High rep cleans and things of that nature do make you tired, but they're recipes for injury too.

TBH, I'm more impressed by the business model. The inventors have probably made a killing. 250K For the winner of the crossfit games is a bigger payday than you get in any strongman competition, and I'm guessing is probably on par with the prizemoney that comes with a Sandow.

I've never been to a Crossfit gym, so I'm not about to pass much judgement. I have however very little in the way of impressive actual strength stats from the best in the Crossfit games. Makes sense that a retired ex-oly weightlifter I believe was the best British Crossfitter a few years back...he was actually strong before he started.

I came from a long bodybuilding type of training history and have been doing crossfit now for 2 years.

I am without a doubt stronger, fitter, faster and look better than I ever did with many years of other types of training. At 42 yrs old I am very very happy with what crossfit does for me...so happy we are opening our own becuase we believe in the training concept and results it brings.
