what would you consider 'respectable lifts'

i dont know any of you guys but if you call these numbers just 'respectable' then your out of touch

assuming you are talking about what would make you stop to watch in the gym, not in a competition then, i think this post needs to hear from average gym goer, not guys who are in the top 1% or less of those that train regular and have been assisted for a lengthy time as well.

i see the occasional 120bench, 140 would i would call impressive not just respectable

squats at 180, i dont think ive ever seen one in person

deadlifts 220, again dont think ive ever seen one in person

but i train in a gym that 99% of people would never even try a 1rm, its also a 'normal' (lol) gym which doesnt just attract a niche of the sport

I don't think I am out of touch at all... I think the question posed was what do we individually find will take our attention in the gym. What exactly is a "normal" gym by the way? I train a lot at a fitness orientated gym and while I don't often see guys doing anything I would deem as noteworthy I still do see the occassional guy bench 140 for reps.

yea you'll find if you change gyms you'll see a different story, but i agree with you in that in most gyms you'll be lucky to see more than a handful of members benching over 120 etc...

Happy to be out of touch, I haven't got the time or inclination to watch members of the general public bench 70kg for reps.... :pfft:

We are on a BBing/PLing forum (with a few from the wider fitness community) so I don't see the value in worrying about general population norms.

Luckily in my main gym the population is about 90% ITM Cup & development rugby players so strength levels are pretty good. Even at Aspyre (a public 'fitness focused' gym) there's a bunch of guys consistently benching 140+ and a few DLing 180+, but not many squatting that heavy.

Never let the prevailing mediocrity set your personal standards!

That's great if thats your PR, I just wont call it 'respectable' but then nor would you if you want to progress! That said I always like seeing people try 1RMs and pushing themselves so I might watch & give you some encouragement!

For the record my first bench press in a comp was 75kg when I was 17 years old! I was stoked, but knew I had a long way to go before I could say it was respectable in my own eyes.

LOL VP - calling shit like it is!

Yup I knew it and wasnt delusional, I've doubled that now for 8 reps so I'm getting there but I'm still not calling my Bench respectable in my eyes!! Progress still to be made!

what i am getting at is i believe most of the replys here are from the group that get watched, so please take it as a compliment

keep comparing yourselves to the professionals, you need to for motivation which is good, but dont forget that most guys will never get close to the numbers being thrown around

maybe have a think about the flip side, if you think anything under a 140 bench is not respectable youve got a very slanted view on things, theres a lot of factors like body weight, age, drugs etc which are important

I see your point, but you've got to look years ahead if you're a noobie and set your targets high to even reach intermediate levels of strength. Take my example, I was 65kg at 16 years old & I couldn't bench bodyweight. I didnt think 2 plates was respectable because I saw guys like Don Poloa doing 140 for 10, and maxing around 180, Derek doing 180 plus for reps.

If you dont aim high you aint going anywhere!

Agree on your latter point - as I said I like watching people going all out for 1RMs, particularly on Squats & Deads - even a 50 kilo weakling trying to squat 75kg for the first time is impressive from a personal achievement POV.

Well I think the further along the journey you are the more it takes to impress you... hence the question being what do we relatively find impressive. I am impressed by someones effort sure but it was about weights and I just have to see some decent iron moved to be impressed. Just like a 220k for reps bencher wouldn't think my 180k was impressive even though he might think it was decent.. (here's hoping)

I'm gona go out on a limb here and say that what most people would consider "respectable" is what they themselves lift or more. Just Sayin. So this is actually a good question... these strength standards give good reference points for 1RMs. Most lifts in the "advanced"/"elite range" would get me looking.

This looks a little generous it has me in the advanced range

I'm always more interested in power to weight to be honest, I'm more impressed with someone small moving heavy weight than a tank moving heavy weight. Case in point would be ...bugger forgot his name, the Aussie who benched demo at NABBA/WFF....Art? Anyway, awesome power to weight ratio.

Now if only i could learn to plant my feet eh Nate :pfft: :pfft:

EDIT: found it,

Angelo Galati MR BENCH 10 x Mr Australia and World Bench Press Champion

255kg at 79kg and ripped.....that's impressive.

:ditto: 95 sounds pretty good mate especially with only 3 months under your belt.

But your only just starting to scratch the surface at the baseline of your potential. Time under the bar = improvement in technique > if you pay attention and ask questions along the way you can pick up small things that deplete your ability to achieve better results. Breathing, grip, posture, foot placement, line of movement, depth, momentum .... it's just as technical as any other.

I vaguely remember being able to bench Jonah Lomu at 90-95kgish (125kg within 12 months of training). But Harry and Nate make good points and based on your age and time under the bar you are going to probably view 100 - 140kg as warm up sets ... no offence to anyone intended :) (160kg is a respectqable working set IMO  way more impressive when you drop it on your face  )
