Ive bin around 5-6 consequetive weeks off gym and had a reason why. The last few days Ive just got back into it, I was wondering how long a period of being inactive till one loses muscle? Will it be easy to get get it back?

During my '18 year old machine' thread my prime I was 95kg, I weighed in today at 92kg.

It would depend on what you do exactly in ur off time whether ur still using ur muscles.

Id say after about a week and a half of no real stress they would start slowing wasting away.

Also depends on your diet. If you keep a mint high protein diet you should retain muscle longer.

Regaining lost muscle. From 5th form PE they said as long as you were off it will take twice as long to get back. For instance 5 weeks off. 10 weeks to get back where you are. But I think ull get back quicker with such a small loss you've had. Muscles have "muscle memory" so you will get it back quicker and easier than when u were originally getting to that weight.

Just like a fat person will also get fatter faster than a skinny person getting fat.

I think breaks in training can be beneficial for other areas of our lives - whatever our reasons for the breaks. My trainer (Kaye O'Neill) reminds me to keep my training in perspective - there are other things in life that are important too.

Recently, after 3 competitions in a row, I had a 3 month break from training - I was SO over working out. I eventually got back into training when my "mind" was ready for it - and am now musclier than I was before the comps.

I even had a 10-year break to have a child - and can testify that there is certainly something to be said for muscle memory - even after that long.

I have a keen interest in the science of Hypertrophy and what really happens to our bodies in the gym and after recovery.

Accepting that as we make our muscles bigger we don't make more muscle cells, so really what is muscle loss?

Is it muscles ability to hold less carbs and water?...afterall that is what fills them up isn't it?

Do muscle cells get broken down when we have time off...and so we really do create new cells when we get back in to the gym and get big again...sounds like Hyperplasia to me which isn't recognised as something weight-training can invoke to a large degree.

This subject of what is muscle gain and what is muscle loss is definitely interesting.

Yeah it's intriguing isn't it. I learned a bit about how muscles work in my Biochem classes at uni.... This is a good read: http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/books/NBK9961/ :)
