Now that im cutting I have some fruit, but back when I was bulking. OH MAN! pancakes, french toast-all just depended how many calories/macros I had left

and that's why your cutting now.

Nah I didn't gain too much fat, just had a slight calorie excess-gaining about 1 to 2kg a month

so you would just eat high in sugar, calorie dense foods at the end of the day and before bedtime if you hadnt consumed all your daily calories/macros for that day? thats not how you build muscle bro.

anyway to answer the question most people will say to have some kind of casein protein.. which can come as a protein powder, cottage cheese or milk

Why not? Is that because of the apparant effect on growth hormone at night time? This is my second bulk and i've had better strength and (I think) muscle gains in this one-my last bulk was 100%, similar calories/macros etc.

I mean I ate 'clean' probably 80% of the time in my last bulk primarily for energy and general health, but followed the IIFYM approach to an extent.

i mix a can of sealord tuna in olive oil with a tub of cottage cheese in a bowl and put half of it back in the cottage cheese tub for the next night. i actually enjoy it its a surprisingly tasty 35g of casein protein goodness and the olive oil slows down digestion further.. well it sounds good in theory anyway  i usually throw in some potato or kumara as well
