I drive from rolleston 4-5 times a week (60km round trip) to train at esbb.

Awesome hardcore lifting atmosphere

Heaps of decent equipment 6 cages, dumbells to 70kg etc (not that ill ever use them )

No wanker policy/ everyone's a helpful gc

Never too busy

No groups of aesthetic wannabe phaggs getting in your way

Cheap as f*ck

If its good enough for Owen Franks it's good enough for me.

Eastside FTW

Awesome hardcore lifting atmosphere there is all of about 2 guys who are strong every one else is a teenager

Heaps of decent equipment 6 cages, dumbells to 70kg etc (not that ill ever use them ) the equipment is either broken , squeaky, chinese, funny angles. Too many cages money would have been spent better elsewhere ie vaccum cleaner.

No wanker policy/ everyone's a helpful gc far to many unemployed types who stand around talking about smoking drugs and they know as much as a stone when it comes to weight lifting.

Never too busy

No groups of aesthetic wannabe phaggs getting in your way apart from all the teenage boys who wear singlets 2 sizes too small

Cheap as f*ck as expensive as any other gym, but the others can afford a vaccum cleaner

If its good enough for Owen Franks it's good enough for me. Owen franks trains at gravity not Eastside if im not mistaken.

Eastside FTW

I dont know how many gyms you have been to but you need to have a look around at some of the others if you think ESB is the Mecca.

At the end of the day if it works for you then it works for you. Personally its not my cup of tea and there are many other reasonsn other than the above, that I wont go it to here as its not the right place.

Im sure others will disagree but the councils gyms, City fitness, fitness canterbury, the snaps, anytimes and others will more than give ESB a run for its money.

 I would counter every point you made but after reading half the thread about piracy I think my time would be more productively spent doing tricep kickbacks.

Ive been doing the gym thing longer than you and have been to plenty of gyms ESB is not at the top of my list. Are you going to tell me the equipment is quality? That the biggest and strongest train there? that the dirt makes it more hardcore? :-s It aint no metroflex!

haha not at all. Im just saying as it is, there is no reason to have dust and dirt an inch thick in places. More dissapointed than mad no reason to run a gym like that. You obviously think its the bees knees so good luck to you. I just dont think it is as I explained above.

Depends what you want out of a gym really. Eastside barbell is definitely the best place for powerlifters. Best place for athletes too IMO with the bands/chains, strongman and conditioning equipment. And we all know free weights are what builds the muscle. Free weights are at any gym so take your pick really (although Snap/Anytime lacks a squat rack?). But at Eastside there's 6 power racks so you won't have to wait for that muppet doing curls in the squat rack if you want to do some squats. Dumbbells up to 70s as well, can't be too many gyms around with that?

No contracts, reasonable fees, 24 hour access - can't complain about that.

But at the end of the day it comes down to the trainee not the environment. Too many people are too quick to blame something else for the reason they are still fat and weak

Trained at esbb 3 times over 2 different trips to Chch. Perfect for what I want in a gym with the equiptment, it doesn't have to be super clean IMO... I'm not going to wear my number ones in the gym.

Wish there was something similar in Auckland. Miada isn't similar and havnt been to CBC but too far to travel. Anyway I assume all the other gyms in Chch are just like all the gyms on Auckland so it's good to have something different and that obviously attracts alot of people.

Bit harsh there tinguerilla. What gym u train at?

minimum of what? your posts confuse me as i cant understand what esb doesnt have that stops you from training hard/getting a good workout? i know not everyone wants to use SSbars or logs for pressing, but there are things like the reverse hyper/ghr that more than outweigh not having a few machines you find in lesmills.

i guess what im saying is, if you arent capable of having a good train there, you need to reeducate yourself. Plenty of dedicated oly lifters there too. And as an aside, if you think commercial gyms are all clean and sanitised, your a fool. i used to train at lesmills and you see some serious lack of hygeine (sp) there......

just my 2c, but curious to know what esb is missing that you need from a gym?

Im not getting what you think and what I think. I expressed in bangbangs post what I thought, if it works for you then enjoy.

From what I can gather Chch seems to be getting more and more 24 hour gyms. This will be convenient for me when I go there on holiday. Curious to know what will happen to Les Mills Riccarton and what exactly happened to Ferrymead. Chch has always been had quality gyms, curious to know about future gyms etc.
