carbohydrate powders!

Hey guys,

Im wanting to use a carbohydrate powder to mix with my protein as one of my meals during the day. I know that 'real' food is much better, and I will be having several 'real' food meals per day. But in terms of timing etc I cannot fit during this meal time.

Is there any carb powders you recommend? any thoughts of waxy maize?

and what I can add to this particular meal of "powder" :)

Thanks

thanks guys,

SM when i looked at another thread in relation to vitargo on nzbb, the dude mentioned it was high gi, which is what im wanting to avoid as a meal replacement carb.

Phedder isnt dextrose a relatively high gi sugar aswell? and would dextrose + fibre be enough carbs for one meal? ie 40-50gm carbs?

Thanks guys

Didnt really think about the GI rating until after I posted it up.

I guess you could use fats etc to slow absorbtion.

Be keen to hear if you find something low GI.

in mass gainers they use maltodextrin/waxy maize as primary source of carbs yeah?

So these arent sugars but are high GI?

The above link is to a carb powder that is Maltrin® M100 which apparently is low GI (rating of 10)...what do you think of maybe using this with a whey/casein and mix some MCT oil into it? anyone use MCT oils??

considering your using it as a meal replacement not a post workout thing I wouldn't bother with glucose. Low Gi carbs and maybe some MCTs or fats would be good. Blue top milk and http://www.bodybuilding.com/store/opt/oatsandwhey.html ?

Vitargo looks all good

Perhaps look at making some home made protein bars?

Special K, Oats, Whey/MPC make some tasty treats :D

  • 2 weeks later...

just had a look at the ON oats n whey and turns out they just use oat flour as main ingredient for oat component, turns out you can buy oat flour in bulk for about $10, anyone used this as part of homemade mass shake??

also powder isnt higher GI, due to increase in surface area when powdered.

Particle size influences the digestion rate and consequent metabolic effects of wheat and maize but not oats.

A few things you wanna way up before you make a decision.

First off virtago is expensive as hell, karbolyn by professional supplements is cheaper as is the one by Labrada where as oat flour is cheap as chips.

Second of all, what is the point of choosing this carb source? When will it be ingested? I'd use virtago or the likes of it intra/post work out, rest of the day I don't see too much value. Oat flour I'd add to protein powders at other times of the day just to add a slow digesting carb.

Probably some other variables I've missed
