benchpress accident

To be fair it was his own fuckin fault that dumb arse spotter was someone who he just meet on the day...... the guy benching wanted to use his own spotters instead off the ones supplied by the comp

Always use a pro-spotter! If I'm at the gym and I got no spotter, I'll go lighter. Don't trust these guys after I asked for a spotter for my squat and he grabbed my hips (almost my butt) while I was getting out of the hole.

Ummm..... that doesn't sound too right does it?

Scary. IPF comp benches now have safety racks to prevent this. I have seen a few near misses but nothing like that.

.

As soon as I saw it - I was surprised that the safety racks didn't catch it. IMO the orgniser is at fault - not the spotter as such.

In the US at the big shows you will find that benchers will request the use of their own spotters BUT only from the lift off position but are usually happy to use the side spotters provided. Depending on the weight the comp refs will request an extra spotter on the side as back up. Doc is right, IPF and now I think WPC/IPA etc have made it compulsory to use a safety rack to prevent this kind of accident happening (especially with the current shirts on the market - grooving them is critical and mis-grooving is easy to do). This looked sad because the first thing I looked for was the side spotters following the bar and Mr Black t-shirt disappeared, probably a misunderstanding but a lesson that will never be forgotten. Not sure what the weight was but depending on the number of 25kg plates it was either 285ish or 330ish...more than enough to cause a fatality!

Hope the lifter came out ok!

UGLY, he shoulda racked it right there when the pick up spotter went for a coffee break....

Top statement about the squat racks vs bench station ay. Those shitty bench stations are useless, and usually at awkward position to use (snap fitness one LAWL), all good if you have a training partner but if you don't, its not the best option.

Even Geraldine only gym has a good safety rack....GERALDINE!

Anyone for a petition ? :3

bring back the 20 pack errr I mean power cage

It fucks me off so much that most gyms don't use power racks, they should be compulsory...plus they are the most useful piece of equipment in the gym

  • 2 weeks later...
Shouldn't be doing such a heavy weight if he couldn't support it even with a shirt on. Scary stuff though

It IS a powerlifting comp; where the objective is to lift more weight than everyone else.

....and not die in the process
