Hello everyone, I'm just new to the site and I thought I'd tell a bit about myself and my goals. I am a university student and I am 18 years old. I used to work out and thought I was in pretty good shape a while ago until uni dragged me in and took all my spare time away. I'm currently on holiday now almost about to start my second semester and I have some new goals in mind about what I want from this next half a year. I currently don't have a gym membership but am looking at getting one, for the time being I have seldomly worked out on a bench press and barbells at home and struggle to utilize them effectively to acheive my desired results as a lack of inexperience with free weights because I mostly only used machines. What I am looking to do is to put on muscle mass, currently I am about 83kg, I am will not have the luxury of protien enhancements because I am dead broke as a student but just want to try gain as much as possible naturally (if it's possible lol). I thought writing this thread would keep my attitude positive about building by feedback. Cheers thanks for reading. I will keep updating!

Hey bro welcome, Both free weights and machines have pro's and con's , so try and balance them effectively to your style of training. And protein from your pure sources , such as chicken is always better than your synthetic sources like the protein shake, so you should be sweet.

There are some really clued up guys and gals on this site that can help out where needed.

Hope you get your gym membership sorted soon, and start pumping the iron, and packing on the pounds..

Goodluck

Hi Coastie. The good news is that the work you did with machines will help you get a feel for what the exercises are supposed to be like with free weights. Just think about similar movements, and focus on feeling the muscle you're trying to work. Under Resources > Useful links you'll find a number of sites with free weight exercises.

Obviously budget is going to be the limiting factor when it comes to your diet, but the better you can eat, the better your results will be. You'll probably find that protein powders are actually cheaper than most other sources of protein, particularly if you get a house brand like Shotgun, Nutratech, or Eatme.

Hey there are a few ways you can still get a rather good amount of protwin in you. If you get free milk at your dining hall, try skulling back a litre or so every meal that will help alot. Also eggs are fairly cheap at roughly 6 dollars a tray.
