Recommended Posts

Hey guys,

I'm looking at importing ON whey and casein from bodybuilding.com

I've never imported anything before.

Can anyone give me a heads up to how much customs will sting me? :D

My order

2x ON Casein 4lb

2x ON Whey 5lb

$316NZD including postage.

Cheers for the help guys. I see they're able to get them in cheap for ON on trademe. One guy sells 5lb ON whey for $170 for 2. From that trademe takes 10%, and they make a profit on top of that. So there must be a way to get it in for cheap.

Got sent this from customs..

"Thank you for your enquiry.

Supplements are subject to 5% import duty. Duty is levied as a percentage of the price paid or payable for the goods.

All goods are subject to Goods and Services Tax (GST) upon importation and is levied at 15% on the sum of the price paid or payable for the goods, plus the duty, plus the cost of freight and insurance paid to transport the goods to New Zealand.

Shipments where the Customs charges are over $60 an additional fee of $38.07 is applicable, made up of

-$25.30 Import Entry Transaction Fee and

-$12.77 Ministry of Agriculture & Forestry (MAF) biosecurity fee.

The exchange used to convert foreign currency to New Zealand currency, for the purposes of Customs charges calculation, will be the rate of exchange gazetted by Customs at the time of “entry” (clearance).

Finally a legal regulation under law allows Customs not to collect charges (Duty/GST) that equate to less than $60 payable.

Example:

Duty = items cost $300NZD x 5% (duty) =$15NZD

GST = (items cost $300NZD + $15NZD (duty) + $75NZD (freight)) x 15% = $58.50NZD

Total Customs charges = $15NZD (duty) + $58.50NZD (GST) + $38.07NZD (ITF) = $111.57NZD

For further information please phone our contact centre on 0800 428 786."

Does whey count as a supplement or food?

Can anyone put this is plain english?

Does that say the minimum fee is 60 bucks or if its under 60 its free?

perhaps plastic has a higher melting point than what the inside of a container reaches?

ever read that it needs to be kept in a cool dry place?

Rather than name calling, why don't you just google it ? This is one of the first things that came up. End of my argument unless anyone wants to discuss it properly?

"...heat damages protein. Especially whey protein. Heat processing ruptures and reforms protein molecules. It's called denaturing, and it makes digestion and absorption difficult.

Scientific studies clearly show that when heat is used to dry protein it burns thousands of cross-linked bonds into the original amino acid structure. When this denatured protein is ingested, the enzymes in your intestines work overtime to break it down. It takes awhile, and for many can be quite uncomfortable. When all is said and done, little protein is actually absorbed and any resulting nitrogen retention is negligible. The worst thing about drying whey protein in this manner is that it destroys highly valuable immunoglobulin fractions..."

So you saying that when I cook a chicken breast the protein is useless? This topics been done to death on here before, maybe you need to do some reading.

No I was referring to whey protein, not chicken, always keen on a good discussion without resorting to name calling

ok,

so tell me this... at what temperature does whey denature at? and what is the average temperature of a shipping container travelling from USA to NZ?

even at the hottest time of the year inside the container located in the hottest location of the container stack i highly doubt that protein powder would denature.. actually im definite and would put money on it.

if it got that hot in there the packaging would be fucked and it wouldnt reach the shelf so even if by some remote chance you are slightly correct its not going to get to the consumer anyway.

you shouldnt make up bullshit lies in order to try benefit you own product sales... someone always knows better and you just look like a untrustworthy idiot.

Not sure about this one NZprotein. Youve stopped short of stating what you mean by "very high temperatures" which would probably resolve this issue as far as shipping containers is concerned.

Given the amount of money importers pump into their products particulaly those vulnerable or perishable to temperature issues (wine is a good example) they are only too aware what would affect their product. Aside from this reefer(coolant/refridgerated) containers are used when at risk.

I have not seen any supplement importers have to resort to refridgerated containers so its probable that the temperature issues you refer to are far in excess of that reached in a shipping container.
