Ridiculous bodybuilding advice!

Since I started lifting 'properly' about a year ago i've been given a whole lot of advice on building muscle and stripping fat. Some advice has been incredibly helpful, while other advice has left me wondering whether that person was just high out of their freaking mind!

Whats some of the worst advice you've been given when it comes to training, nutrition and all things 'bodybuilding'?

Theres a lot of crazy bodybuilding myths out there!

I was told by a PT back when I started training not to lift too heavy with the weights 'cos it'll make me look bulky and butch. So for aaages, I'd stick to light weights, doing reps for Africa

Another one was to never let your knees go over your toes when you squat.. And further to that, don't go below parallel when you squat 'cos its bad for your knees.

Hmmm.... were do I start?

I'll start at the beginning... 1.get big by doing heavy weights and low reps and once you get massive do light weights really fast to cut up the muscle?

-A lot of people dont have the fibre type to get growth from low reps and heavy weights

2.Your arms will grow without direct training

-bull crap for most people, I ended up with a 46 inch chest and 13.8 inch arms from doing this for 2 years, however my older sibling got great gains from this, once again the fibre type

3. Traing slow will build strength... f*ck OFF

4. Trainer: 'I can bench 140kg's' Me: I've never seen you do it? Trainer: 'nah, but I can hit 100kg's for 8-10 so my 1rm is 140kg's'

5. All you need to do is squat for legs...

-MAYBE front AND back squat, definetly front

6. And.....Trainer: 'WOW!! my bulks over!!' Me: yeah, but you've put on a lot of fat? Trainer: 'Yeah but now I'm going to turn the fat into muscle!!'

Going to play devils advocate here,

Im a powerlifter, specifically and do 1 exercise (if any) on my biceps directly. My arms have grown equally, (if not grown bigger than other) muscle groups with out direct training. Just anecdotal evidence but evidence nonethe less.

Also as a powerlifter my leg training consists of.... Squats. Again my legs used to be a major weak point in body but now due to squats (and only squats) they are balanced if not a strength. I would say all you NEED is squats but would definitley agree that adding other more isolation or muscle specifc exrcises are beneficial aswell.

My worst advice was in regard to diet where i was told to eat high protein and carbs dont make you grow. I toned up and chicks stil threw themselves at me but i was a weed and gained f*ck all. Now i love my carbs and keep gaining in strength and size. In my opinion if you are thinner then carbs should be your best friend.

Hi mate,

Your a lucky man!!! I ended up with pipe cleaner arms, a barrell chest and 'ice cream cone legs' when I trained directly for strength

I had quads that were 26 at the top and 19 at the tear drop!!

My brothers like you though, he got massive front delts and triceps from bicep curls... go figure.

If you dont mind, I recognise you slightly? whats your age and weight class, and your equipped and raw total?

f*ck my mate believes in 'turning fat into muscle' as well...WHAT THE f*ck!? I tried explaining what calories are and how muscles and fat are two completely different things...He just thinks, lift 5 times a week, all carbs are bad (what the f*ck) and whey protein will make you huge...No, just no.
