Protein powder recommendations.

Heya, I've been through the previous threads discussing different brands but I haven't been able to get precisely what I'm after; they mostly seem to concentrate on ingredients or taste (for obvious reasons).

Cost is my biggest factor. I'm a student and protein powder is definitely a luxury item for me, but it makes enough of a difference that it's a top priority one. I have a very good diet and get an okay amount of protein, but I don't eat red meat or eggs and can't afford fish or much dairy, and even chicken is really pushing it cost-wise - chicken and lentils are my main protein source, with a bit more from cheese. Topping it up with protein powder with my breakfast oatmeal and after workouts really makes a difference.

I'm aware that there's a point where you're paying cheaper for just complete crap that you might as well not bother with, and I absolutely want to avoid that. So while it's a somewhat subjective judgment, I'd really appreciate some advice on the cheapest (but still decent) protein powder I could purchase. Buying in bulk is a must - 3kg minimum, but the more the better.

I'm located in central Wellington and usually buy from Gymeez, but also quite happy to order online. I've tried a few different things in the past and quite liked Nitrosyn - Leanshot was DELICIOUS but I need something with no caffiene. I used Dymatize ISO-100 for a time, but it gave me gas and the runs something AWFUL. I'm told MyoFusion is a similar product so I probably want to avoid that one too. I've been reading about the 20kg whey protein from Fonterra and am seriously considering giving that a go.

If it makes a difference, I'm a 28yo woman. I'm not looking for anything fancy in the way of fat burners or the like that are often aimed at women, I just want a decent protein supplement. Thanks folks!

eggs are cheap and an awesome source of protein

tinned tuna and slamon too. keep an eye out for specials and sales

also maybe some beans like cannellini etc as u like lentils

as for protein powders... keep it for post workout only and it'll last u longer and use the proteins above the rest of the time and non-train days

id reccomend nutratech

off bodybuilding.co.nz

some great deals on there for sure. buy in bulk and you'll save more $$

Hey awesome, where are you studying?

I'm not looking for meal replacements, cuz I like my food. Primarily post-workout, but probably also to supplement my breakfast. ATM I'm just having milk with my oatmeal, but with the price of dairy it's not any cheaper anymore!

I'm not really aiming for a specific result in terms of body changes, which I realize isn't terrible helpful since from what I know you can put on muscle or burn fat, but it's hard to do both at once. I am enjoying getting stronger but I'm not looking to really put on mass and bulk up. Likewise I'm certainly not opposed to losing some fat and toning up more, but I'm also perfectly happy with my current shape. I really just want to stay fit, healthy and recover easily from working out.

ok, so all you need is cheap but reasonable quality protein. nutratech is well cheap for the quality looking at around $115 for 3kgs delivered. Price goes down as you increase quantity...

doing a BCA up at vic

you?

Another (part time ) Wellington student here.

And I also hate eggs, actually can't fcking stand them.

I use Bioplex whey. It's around $160 for 5 kilos, which as a breakfast protein addition and post workout slug lasts ages. Pretty good flavours too, not amazing mixing but in a shaker it's fine.

Cool! Taste isn't a big deal for me, I gulp it down in seconds after a good workout so I barely taste it! Thanks guys.

I'm third-year BA up at Vic. Always keen to meet other people if anyone feels like grabbing a coffee or something sometime. Especially other people who workout - with one exception, none of my friends are the slightest bit interested in the subject. ;>

nutra tech offer flavored and non flavored, so if taste aint an issue then you can always get the cheaper non flavored option.

Yeah im a bit older than those I study with so tends to be a bit annoying at times, and the fact that all my friends are working full time or overseas etc

I'm in the same boat! I went and worked full-time for a few years before figuring out what I wanted to study at Uni, so I tend to be one of the older people in my class.

Have you tried the cookies n cream nutra-whey? I love it as a general flavour but I wonder if it would be gag-worthy as a protein shake. :P

Ive personally never tried nutra tech, I stick with optimum nutrition generally... you can check all the supplement websites out on a weekly basis. As a majority of them have regular specials where you can get good brands at a cheap price. So pays to keep an eye out...

what specific majors are you doing?

Currently majoring in Linguistics, with a focus on sociolinguistics and cross-cultural communication. Not entirely decided yet, but will probably head up to Auckland once I'm done to do another BA in NZSL interpreting.

You?

Bioplex tastes great to me, well compared to supermarket protein anywho. That Xtream place sells berry, choc and vanilla flavours.

Regarding the friends, you should just bully them into hitting the gym - works for me! Though I do think my mates get sick of my "motivational" comments at times.

And like both of you I'm a (slightly) mature student and agree it sucks being a few years older than the majority of people in classes. I study health science at Massey, good fun.

I did the first two years of my degree at Massey and loved it. It was a really hard decision to move to Vic!

  • 2 weeks later...

Pm'd

I split out Davis Trading sacks for a few lifting buddies, so if you want some bulk whey I can probably give you some.

I get it for around $23 at the moment and just add on $5 for the time tagging and bagging it up

Can drop off, just flick me $5 for petrol or something as long as you're not to far out of town

So you charge the same as nutratech, but with a benchtop sterility degree?

Kiore, I no longer buy protein powder (get it from food now), but get BCAA instead. 500g lasts me about 3-4 weeks. I power it back. Never felt better. Good value for money, and though it lacks the extra goodies you get in whey, it is a fantastic product for fitness recovery.
