Free Gym Memberships- Youth

Dr Squat

Recommended Posts

Eastside barbell is offering free gym memberships for youth. We anticipate that these youth are likely to still be at school and probably aged 10-18 years old. We will consider those undertaking tertiary study.

Members will need to be available to train at least 2 times per week between 3.30 and 5.30 pm. These memberships include coaching in general weight training, Weightlifting and Powerlifting. Children will train in a safe and supervised environment. We follow the Australian Strength and Conditioning Association (ASCA) guidelines for training children.

We are initially offering 20 memberships.

This initiative is a continuation of our strategy to attract more young people to strength related sport.

Eastside Barbell is a registered charity and an incorporated society. We are a not for profit organisation.

Great Idea, wish more gym were able to do this,

Wish the Govt would get behind things like this aswell, as they are the ones that keep saying that we fat, fat, fat........

The govt and other various sports groups do through sports in school. Why should the Govt get behind your health by paying for a gym membership your an adult right so take responsablility for yourself.

Having this sort of thing available to todays youth is exactly what the country needs. Nowadays they have so many things to tempt them off the path. Drugs, alcohol, smoking etc and having something like this available could save a lot of kids from heading down the wrong path and destroying thier lives. A lot of kids dont like taking part in team sports such as rugby soccer and netball but the gym is somewhere they can fit in and still be a part of something. Hopefully this takes off and spreads to other parts of the country.

As I married a teacher,I know that the school he teachers at sport, is the first to go out the window. I know that it is the same in a number of schools as well.

As an adult I agree, take responsablility for yourself that is why I am here and I have already lost well over 40kgs of fat. Yes I did the a number of years ago but I have maintained my weight now I am paying to go to the gym. I know that if I was able to do this at school I would have especially if I could get some funding for it. There are a number of famlies that simply can not afford to pay for a child to go to the gym, I grew up in one of the families and i know that if I did go there might of been the possiblity that I would have never have gotten fat to start with.

We are located in the heart of "lower socio-economic" Christchurch. This is all about giving opportunities to those who would not have otherwise had this opportunity. In return for this opportunity these kids need to show self discipline and commit to the gym for at least a term.

You are right- many families live day to day and struggle even with the basics. We all know the positive impact the gym can have on our lives.

This is exciting for us. We are in the queue for some funding to assist but we care committed to this anyway.

BIG PROPS to you Doc, that's a huge community assist right there. I often think that if I had never found weight training life wouldn't be so good and I am sure a lot of other guys found that a passion for the iron and mixing with the right people in the formative years was a huge part of the person they are today!!! Makes me wish I was closer to lend a hand, you do good things bro!
