Boxing training

I'd like to learn boxing this year but don't know where to start. I live in Massey, West Auckland and ideally I'd like to train as close to home as possible.

I'm not looking to compete, rather just learning some technique and actually how to throw/take a punch. I don't really want to go to a cardio class and just punch some bags/go for a run... is there somewhere I can learn how to defend and throw a punch too?

Is there anywhere near me you could recommend? Is equipment expensive?

Thanks!

I think you'll find most if not all boxing classes are very fitness orientated, i've tried at a couple of gyms and have been fairly buggered after the first class, it gets easier after the first few weeks though.

nothing wrong with a bit of cardio while you learn anyway

You wont learn much till you have the required cardio level anywhere. You have to learn to move before you can learn to punch, so make a skipping rope your friend and get jumping mate.

As for learning to take a punch? Lol! You either have a glass jaw or you dont I'm afraid. Good luck!

Oh of course, im not suggesting I dont want to have to do cardio! I was just hoping there would be a program or gym that is lead by someone who isn't just like: run 2 laps, 10 punches, repeat! Maybe I've got the wrong idea of how these classes work, if so then sorry about that.

i lift 4 times a week and love it. Just looking for another challenge to keep me busy during the week. As for learning to take a hit, i mean sparring, or basic defensive techniques! I can assure you,i dont have a glass jaw... but I do have wafer jaw, haha.

nah man its not likely to be a whole lot of running, likely skipping for warmup then a whole lot of bag work (you'l wish it was running after a few rounds on a heavy bag  )

I think there is one in Henderson can't think of the name off top of my head, northside on the shore is meant to be good if you can make the trip
